They improve by learning new coping skills and behaviour patterns. Their condition is not changed, however: they cannot cease to be autistic as that is something either physical or psychological (no one is quite certain which) that is hard-wired into the brain.

Autism is a neurological condition, very different from strokes, cerebral palsy, etc--but similar in the way that the wiring in the brain is affected and this cannot be fixed. Children can improve as can adults after a stroke or brain injury, because of something called plasticity in the brain. Children's brains are much more plastic which is why early intervention is so important. Plasticity refers to the ability for some parts of the brain to take over for other parts or for the brain to be rewired. Autism cannot be cured--but the effects of it can be treated to the point where the child no longer appears autistic.

It isn't that they CAN'T be cured, it's that we don't understand enough about autism to cure it. There are many different types of autism, some more profound than others. In all of them, the children process information in a different way than most people. Sometimes the children learn to adapt, or 'act normally' because it helps them live in society.
It's really a mystery. Just accept any improvements as blessings.

Autism is a neurological problem with the brain's wiring gone awry (not a very scientific answer!), but children with autism can be taught strategies through different interventions that improve their sensory processing ability. Most of the children with autism that you see that withdraw do so because they are overstimulated by all the sensory input from the world around them; the lights, sounds, textures of their clothing, etc. overwhelm them and they shut them out. The things that therapists & teachers & parents do to help them doesn't change their sensory processing, it just helps them cope better.

Read the book by Judy and Sean Barron called "There's a Boy in Here" Sean functionally lives with autism. Also research Temple Grandlin who also is functional. ABA therapy is considered the only beneficial therapy. I work with a wonderful 8 year old autistic boy. Also, this childs mother has spent tons of money on supplements, cures, etc. He is considered high functioning, but so far no cure. Be careful and consult a doctor if trying treatments.

I dont know if you will believe this or not... Cause I have never seen it in my own life, but my mother knew a lady (from a chat forum) who had a son with autism... He developed normally, but then when he was three or four (I think) he completely went into himself (as the women explained it) and never spoke another word. Well, according to her her hours upon hours of reading online paid of. She read that people with autism are low on whatever minerals are in epsoms salt. She gave her son an epsoms salt bath, and according to her, he BEGAN talking again, like he had develloped normally "under the surface." Since he epsoms salt were sooo cheap, she bought ALOT of it to keep in her house (just incase). I believe she said that slowly after the bath, he would go back into his autistic state once the minerals absorbed by his skin from the bath were used up, so she would give him another bath when needed...

Anyways, I actually just looked it up online for the first time myself. It seems there is some truth there.

I did a google search, typing in "epsoms salt and autism" Many sites were pulled up of interest but I cant mention them all here, so you may want to do your own search.

If you or someone you know has an autistic child, I hope this will help you. if it does, Boy, I'd sure like to hear about it. Just to see if it is real coming from a second person... my e-mail address is maudlinblithe@yahoo.com
