If you cover one ear, you can hear the echo and pitch of your voice louder. This is useful when you are having trouble hearing your own voice over the other noise or music. It's a good way to tell if your pitch is OK, but unlike what other answerers have said, it actually sounds less like your real voice because you are hearing more of the echo and not what your voice sounds like after it hits the air. What you hear when you cover your ear is more like the way a deaf person talks.
Most good singers can tell if they are in key without doing this.
In order to find out how good you are, You just need to sing for a singer and ask how to improve!

If you think about popular singers, some of the most unlikely, and not very good voices are the most famous. Singing is about singing the right notes and being musical, but how your voice naturally sounds a lot of time is rated good or bad basiced on how people perceive you- as a good performer.
The ear things is just a way to hear yourself better. I don't recommend it, sometimes it's nessassary if your playing with a very loud band, but if you're singing with a piano or something light, putting your hand to your ear looking like your pretending to be a rock star.

Well, the second question is the easiest. If you cup your hand over your ear it directs sound into your ear, which makes it louder. People use this so they can hear their own singing in a loud environment.
The first question.... Do you sing in key? are you flat? can you hit a note that someone else plays? do people tell you that you have a nice voice?
I hate Karaoke personally, but it's a great way of finding out if you can sing. If people boo you off the stage, that's a bad sign...

The absolute best way to find out if you can sing is to hire a professional voice coach. They can be found by asking at your local music store. Not a CD store but a store that sells musical instruments. It won't cost much and their job is to be honest and tell you if you have the chops or not. The reason people put a finger in their ear is it helps them hear themselves better.

How do youknow if your singing is good? First for yuorself does it feel good inside? You will get pins and needles when you are singing beautifully without expectations.
Sing in harmony with one of singers on discs or TV Do you have the breath control? the harmony etc.
Then for whom does it have to be good And how good do you want it to be? To get an unbiased opinion take a singing lesson and ask. You might want to take several lessons to stretch your voice.
People block out the outside noiseand hear it from their inside. Try blocking out both ears and see the difference in sound.

If you cup your hands over your ears so that the openings of your hands are facing your mouth, you can hear your own voice better as it comes out. Smotimes you might have to do that to make sure you are singing in the same note or key as the group or instruments. The other way is to wear bins from your mike's lead.

Singing is something that everybody can learn and improve. Of course, some are more naturally skilled than others, but even a poor voice can be overcome by dedication, practice, and more practice. Even if you're content to sing in the shower, there are some things you can do to improve your voice. This is probably the best online course to improve your singing skills https://tr.im/sUKxI
Your golden voice will be ringing out in no time!

They block one ear because they want to know how their voice TRULY sounds. Sometimes when you hear noise it bounces around in your skull before hitting your cochlea (the part of the inner ear that transfers sound into information and sends it to your brain) and can warp the sound before you hear it. That's why some people sing and they think they sound good yet they sound completely PATHETIC because the tone warps and comes into the persons head totally good but it truly was HORRID with a capital H and I and D

I am a singer myself - if you don't believe me, check out my youtube,

By covering one ear while you sing, for many people, helps you hear supposedly what other people hear when they hear your voice.
I don't know if that's true, but if your ears aren't clogged up it certainly helps. If you want to know what you sound like, record yourself, like you said, or just sing for someone you can trust, they'll give you an honest opinion. Youtube.com is a very good site for putting up singing videos in my opinion, I reccommend you record something and put it up there.
