President Jefferson studied the Quran in order to understand why Muslims were attacking American ships. Jefferson and Adams concluded that Islam was based on a violent and intolerant doctrine which gave rise to the unprovoked attacks on American vessels.
So, Jefferson read the Quran and not only "didnt convert" but instead concluded that it was a violent and intolerant belief.
How dumb is this Representative? The record on Jeffersons views is crystal clear.
CITATION -
Adams and Jefferson explained, on what grounds these outrageous acts of unbridled savagery could be justified: "The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the laws of the prophet, that it was written in their koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their [islams] authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners...." http://www.danielpipes.org/comments/35803

It's all for face value, Ellision swearing in on Jefferson's Qu'ran. It's to propel the "muticulture" ideal in a major way, and to the masses, make it appear as if the the majority of Americans aren't still Islamophobic. While it's a gesture steeped in irony in and of itself, it makes me fear something is around the corner. A page has been turned, and people need to pay attention.

President Jefferson didn't think much of the Christian Bible either, but he believed that one's faith is a personal matter, something that should be decided as a matter of conscience. He would not have been in favor of forcing non-Christians to swear oaths on Christian Bibles.

Congressman-elect Ellison was born and reared in Detroit, Michigan. The last time I checked, that was part of the United States. Sorry you have to share space with other people. That's what human society is all about.
"Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear." ~ Thomas Jefferson

Actually when house members are sworn in they do not usually swear on any book. There is a mass swearing in ceremony where they raise their right hand and repeat the oath. I think Rep. Ellison will actually just be holding the book. There have been previous swearing in ceremonies where people used books other than the bible or nothing at all. In 1825, John Quincy Adams reportedly used a law volume. News accounts say Theodore Roosevelt used no Bible in taking his first oath of office, in 1901. It's Ellison's constitutional right to choose a book that's meaningful to him.

Ah, the truth regarding History... This is also what lead Jefferson to sign the Treaty with Tripoli, in which Article 11 reads that America was NOT FOUNDED on Christian religion....
But the isssue remains: What exactly SHOULD the Rep swear an oath over? A bible that he considers junk? That would make his oath junk. And, I have to ask - every politician thus far HAS sworn an oath over the Bible...and it doesnt seem to work worth a damn in preventing these politicians from becoming criminals, fraudsters and pediphiles...so whats the use swearing over a Bible in the first place???

Do you feel more comfortable when a POLITICIAN swears on a work of fiction? Wouldn't a dictionary be more reliable? All religion is a lie. If there is a God, why would he want you to worship a book? It's a stupid cultural superstitious custom.

It was the basis for the drafting of the Treaty of Tripoli. If anyone is unfamiliar with this document, Article 11 should be of particular interest.

Why is Rep. Ellison swearing-in on President Jefferson's Quran?
Ellison is using his own Unholy Quaran.
I would expect Jefferson BURNED HIS!

He is representing his fellow Muslims in the worse way possible. He thinks somebody gives a crap what he uses to swear in on since anybody who cares won't be there. He is just stirring up more hatred and the Islamic people will stand back and say nothing as usual.
