Support - talking to other parents.
Sharing Babysitting - time for yourself.
Information - many parents have information that you don't yet.
Child interaction - good to learn how to interact before school.

Lots more, but you get the idea.

When my daughter was born I went from working to being a stay at home Mom, then the military moved us to a new place and I didn't know anybody. It was one of the happiest times of my life but also one of the loneliest. I wish I had known about a play group to put my daughter in when she was a baby, it would have benefited her and myself because I would have had other people to talk to during the day and also to chat and compare things about our babies/toddlers with. My daughter was very shy when she did start pre-school, I think it was because she was used to only being around my husband and me. She's now in dance and she's not so shy, and many of my friends are other parents I've met at the dance classes.

Networking opportunities and shared knowledge! I would look for one that meets consistently in a regular place and seems to have a good number of members that speak well of it.
