I watched Supervolcano on DVD, and picture it:
He's on the plane (as a passenger) and this electric box is telling him all of these earthquakes are going off around Yellowstone. The air hostess tells him to turn it off. They walk to the front of the plane, he explains who is (scientist in charge of Yellowstone) and says that the ash could put the journey in danger. She then beleives him and opens the cockpit door without knocking or unlocking it.
Is that right?
Later on, he can smell sulphur, so runs straight down the cabin and opens the cockpit door himself!! He is then BEHIND the pilot!!!
Is that right? Could that happen?

You have just got too love Hollywood. You would not be able to simply walk into an Airline Cockpit today.

The FAA ( Federal Aviation Authority) Requires strengthening of cockpit doors. The doors will be designed to resist intrusion by a person who attempts to enter using physical force. This includes the door, its means of attachment to the surrounding structure, and the attachment structure on the bulkhead itself. The FAA rule uses an impact standard that is 50 percent higher than the standard developed by the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. In addition to intrusion protection, the FAA is using a standard sufficient to minimize penetration of shrapnel from small arms fire or a fragmentation device. The agency is providing guidance to operators on acceptable materials. All new doors must meet existing FAA safety requirements. -- Requires cockpit doors to remain locked. The door will be designed to prevent passengers from opening it without the pilot's permission. An internal locking device will be designed so that it can only be unlocked from inside the cockpit. -- Controls cockpit access privileges. Operators must develop a more stringent approval process and better identification procedures to ensure proper identification of a jump seat rider. -- Prohibits possession of keys to the cockpit by crewmembers not assigned to the cockpit.

Quite a few years ago, when this film was made it was possible to just open the door - I've been on a flight where the cockpit door was open all the way during the flight. Since the 9/11 atrosity though security has gone all serious & in theory the door should be locked from the inside and is bullet resistant.... however, coming back from Greece a couple of months back - the cabin crew were in & out of the cockpit all night!

No way.

If this was at all plausible, then the scientist would have written permission from the owner of the airline and the Government. Also, I very much doubt he'd be on a commercial airline, he would be in a private scientific aircraft, as this is much more practical.

Also, how can a box at altitude, detect earthquakes? Seismographs are bolted to the ground!

Besides that, the theory of getting easy access to the cockpit is not possible! The cockpit door is locked for nearly the whole flight.

This isn't true. You can't just go up and open a cockpit door. Some pilots tell the air hostess to give a knock like ( tap-tap- tap- wait 3 secs - tap) sort of thing. Also an air marshal would be able to open the door as it is his job to protect people and the crew.

Not in reality. No ordinary passenger may gain access to the cockpit anymore, unless the flight crew are a bunch of embiciles. What you saw is the beauty of hollywood fiction.

Yikes..i did not understand that the robbery fee replaced into so intense, and you're suitable appropriate to the theory that if somebody might desire to take some thing out, then they might additionally positioned some thing in. even if, I nevertheless does not opt for to get on an airplane without the stern measures of seek and seizure being completed.

This canot happen because now the airplanes have better doors that can't get open that easily. The FAA is coming up with newer and newer devices to prevent that from happening.
