Benadryl, Piriton etc are anti allergy (Antihistimines) formulas but they have the side effect of inducing drowsiness and sleep. They work by blocking the allergy response which also causes a sleepy response but it is not harmful otherwise the medicines would not be sold over the counter. However they are not recommended long term. Make sure you purchase the formulas which do not state "non drowsy formula" on the box, use only for 4-5 days and the same goes for Nytol (the non herbal version) which is designed to aid sleep but is the same group of drugs as the other two I mentioned. Piriton is the cheapest and most effective but you will wake up with a very dry mouth and feeling a bit hungover.

Benadryl is great for sleeping. In fact the active ingredient in Benadryl is the same as in Tylenol nighttime. It will help you relax just enough to be able to sleep but not zonk you out. I use it all the time when I am having sleepless nights. I dont use full strength however, I find that the childrens chewable is the best.

To answer the second part of your question. The benadryl you have is safe..Thast why they sell it over the counter. For those that liked Nytol, I have to offer this. I tried it and it gave me a personality change. I was horrible the next morning.. Either are safe for you to take medically

Benadryl is Diphenhyramine Hydrocloride.

It's an antihistamine that has a side effect of putting you to sleep.
Or it's a sleepy pill that has the side effect of clearing up your nose.

Same drug, marketed two different ways.
Actually they also sell it as a diet pill which then is:
Suppress your appetite, make you sleepy and clear your nose.

Same drug now 3 different ways. Hope I put you to sleep, but you have to take ownership and start reading the labels. Actually talk to the pharmacist not the 16 year old in the aisle. They like questions and will help you.

So Benadryl Allergy relief you need to read the label. If all it's got is Diphenhyramine HCL, it's one to two pills at 25mg each. (on the label, don't exceed label dosage.

If it says Diphenhyramine Hydrocloride.see if there is also:
advil (acetominephen) (sp)
aspirin
tylenol
i.e. pain killers in it.

Otherwise go to the dollar store and buy the 24 caplets for a buck. It's the same stuff and will probably be labeled antihistamine.

But you have to read the label.

It may also have a decongestant in it.
typically phelyphrine HCL. A rather crappy decongestant.

If you have not slept for four days, even consider going to a doctor?

I think that you are originally couldn't sleep do to anxiety and stress over daily life, and then screwed up your sleep schedule by sleeping all day, instead of just staying away till bedtime or taking a short nap.
Now your system is all screwed up and you are becoming obsessive over being scared that you aren't going to be able to sleep again. It is just freaking you out.

I think that you need to really just relax and remember there is nothing wrong with you. This is just a bad spell and you can get over it.

Take the Benadryl - unless it says on the box non drowsy, it will make you sleep. Benadryl is benadryl and will cause sleepiness in most people.

I have take nytol before and it is okay for a temporary fix but it is awful for a long term solution. Nytol will allow you to get to sleep BUT it isn't a deep sleep and for me it causes me to sleep relestlessly and I feel hungover the next day. I will wake up tired with a terrible headache.

If you do get to sleep don't just keep taking it and sleep for a couple days - sleep for 8 or 10 hours and then get up and have a normal day, try to get out and exercise, stay busy so you'll be tired again the next night. you may just feel like getting in bed all day but resist it. don't let yourself get to bed until a reasonable hour and then if needed take the Benadryl again.

I would go back to the dr and let them know that you can't sleep with out OTC sleep aids. They will either give you a better solution or an anxiety medicine so you don't think you need the sleep aids.

Good luck. SD

Benadryl is used for allergic reactions and vets use it for only that, WHY would they suggest this? It is not going to make the dog drowsy at all, that is anesthesia that simply puts them to sleep while they go for surgeries and sometimes if the dog is too stressed when something like nail clipping and shaving/grooming is done they will give a small amount. Ask them if they can do anything other then benadryl as it isn't going to work anyhow. Get a new vet, if your vet is scared to go around this dog in such a simple thing, they could put a muzzle on the dog before clippings, all vets are supposed to handle any situation regardless if the dog bites. Get a muzzle for the dog and do it yourself, or bring the muzzle with you to the vet.

Benadryl is an antihistamine, meaning it is an allergy medicine. BUT it's been used for 50 yrs as a sedative also. Go ahead and take it. Nytol is the exact same chemical in a different and more expensive wrapper (diphenhydramine hydrochloride- HCl is the chemical abbreviation for hydrochloride). I've used Benadryl for years as a cheap, effective sedative, for both anxiety and for sleeplessness, at the advice of my psychiatrist.

I wouldnt advise Nytol, i work in the police and you will be surprise how many people pass away in the sleep and have had nytol before they went to bed! maybe no connection but isnt worth the risk. Could you be stressed? Or are you too hot at night? You said before you slept in the day, most people have the heating off in the day and on at night.

Other than that you can buy hypnosis cd's (or download it and put on your ipod). Whale music and running water might not be your thing but i know several people who swear by it.

Hope this helps

Benadryl contains a anti-histamine, called diphenhydramine .

Diphenhydramine blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in the body.

Diphenhydramine is used to treat sneezing; runny nose; itching, watery eyes; hives; rashes; itching; and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

Diphenhydramine is also used to suppress coughs, to treat motion sickness, to induce sleep, and to treat mild forms of Parkinson's disease.

I haven't tried benadryl before, but have used Nytol, and although it didn't induce sleep - it did enable me to have a more restful night. if this doesn't work, try a visit to you GP!! Good luck!
