Believe it or not Gold Bond Medicated powder does wonders. Actually my vet told me to try it on my golden, and in 2 days the hotspot had healed. Theres no prevention but when it does happen this works great.

Treatment you need to see a vet to check that the dog doesn't need antibiotics, they may also gibe you an antibiotic lotion that has local in it.
Prevention, keep you Golden retriever clipped in summer and bath in a anti malassezia shampoo such as Malaseb.
Hotspots often start with an insect bite or scratch or heat rash and then your dog licks and chews at it and makes it moist which in the hot weather is a lovely moist hot areas to grow bacteria and thats when it gets gross and yuk.

I don't know how to prevent them ,but teabags work well for cooling them. Clip the hair around the area, then pat it down with a wet tea bag.I just went through this with my springer and lab.And this treatment really worked,But if your dog has open sores you really should see your vet.Good luck.
