It can't be a boxer because they are only one dimensional (as in they only punch, but thats not saying boxers aren't tough as nails, i'm just saying they can't kick, throw elbows and knees, or fight on the ground.). I'm talking fighting like Pride fighting, Ufc, K-1 fighters. To me the best fighters come from K-1 and Pride. Don't get me wrong, UFC has great fighters, but Pride has a little more edge. Chuck lidell went to fight in pride and he got his *** handed to him. To me the best pound for pound fighter in all is "kid" yamamoto. He's small, but if we're talkin pound for pound, Kid is fast as hell, has a good stand-up, and a good ground fight. But thats me, i want to know what everyone else thinks.

Okay, lets review your question and comments first. Pride and K1 have deeper talent pools than the UFC, but that doesn't mean that the have the best fighters. Chuck lost in a Pride tournament, which is very different than the UFC format. He will beat Rampage next time around. I agree that Yamamoto is an excellent fighter, but these guys are fast because they are small - which should be taken into account when discussing pound for pound. That all being said, here are my top 5 pound for pound:

1. Fedor Emelianenko - the most complete fighter out there. He has the toughest competition in the toughest weight class.
2. Mauricio Shogun Rua - did you see how he mowed down the competition in last year's LHW tournament?
3. Mirko CroCop - he looked great in the Grand Prix. Pride made a huge mistake not giving him an immediate title shot.
4. Chuck Liddell - can knock anyone out with either hand or either leg, which is rare.
5. Georges St. Pierre - his only loss is to a living legend. He would hand Gomi his ***.

Its very hard to say, I think any given day any fighter can be the best. I have been a MMA fan for quite a while and everytime I think someone is the best, they get beat. I use to think that Belfort was going to be a ledgend and then I thought Marc Colman, now I really think Fedor is going to be on top for a while.
But as far as saying the best pound for pound I think It could go to alot of fighters.

george st pierre pound for pound. yes pride has good fighters but the ufc also does styles make fights even though chuck got beat up by rampage it was in a ring and with prides rules which are very different but chuck beat tito who beat wandelai who beat rampage so i think as a fan from the dan and gracie days till now there is not a lot of difference in the caliber but the setting and rules factor more into wins with pride vs ufc

i think there are a lot of good fighters out there from countries such as australia that are better than most of the big names around now, they just dont get the oppurtunity (for various reasons)to get into the big time.so to speak.
a lot of them just retire way to early.one of the reasons it's just to hard to get a fair go on the world stage.
i dont know if kid yamamoto would be the best but he's definitely up there when your talking pound for pound.

(sighs and shakes my head) Let's go through this again. The toughest fighter is probably someone you and I have never heard of. Lidell and all those guys are competing in an ATHLETIC spectacle with a referee and rules, where you can tap out and there is a Dr at ring side in case you get a hangnail. If you want a tough fighter, find a Navy SEAL or any other military specialist trained to KILL with no rules. Perhaps an inmate who fights more often than most MMA athletes and for higher stakes, like his life or to keep his rectum from getting raped by Big Bubba. It is not that impressive if the price of losing is a smaller payday and a notch in the loss column. If a SEAL or inmate loses they are probably dead. Let's keep MMA in perspective .. they are the best at what they do .. fight in a controlled ring with rules and an easy way to get out of trouble before any real damage happens

In a Muay thai sense then I would have to say Ramon Dekker. He had over 200 professional fights with 175 wins, 90 KOs - back in the old days he was awesome!
