The doctor was palpating (feeling) some of your internal organs such as your liver and intestines, to see if they were of normal size and shape. Also, he can feel if there are any ruptures or hernias. Hernias are the intestine protruding through the muscle wall of the abdomen or groin area. They can be come strangled or twisted and this conditions is life threatening and requires immediate surgery. Also, the lymph system runs throughout your body and those nodules can also be felt. Increase size could mean an infection in your body system. If they are enlarged the doctor would order more extensive tests. Tumors can be felt in some body cavities.
I don't mean to scare you with all the technical stuff, but if you have any pain or abnormal lumps don't hesitate to call your doctor. Be safe!

the abdomen is full of organs and a touch or press type check is one way to find any internal growths or other hard or unusual spots. As well, it can detect normal abdominal hernias (though not inguinal ones which usually involve coughing).

Your doctor was looking for hernias.
Hernias are protrusion of viscerae (abdominal organs), through the muscle layer of the abdomen.
Mprmally, we always have identified the "important" or the most likely places where to find umbilical (navel), inguinal (groin) and flank hernias.
Your doctor was testing the integrity of the muscle wall, and just found nothing ....Thank God.
