I am alive...my father was in San Fran Cisco in a troop transport when they dropped the bombs...I and probably 1,000,000 people living today owe our existance to these bombs. The Japanese were not going to give up without killing half their civilians and at possibly 50,000 American troops. I know this was a terrible thing to do, but the fire bombings of the Japanese cities killed far more and the Japanese government still fought on...I've read that they believed the were protected by their gods and they thought that they could not lose....I know the innocent people need compassion, but the Japanese military had a complete grip on all aspects of their society and killed 20 million innocent people in Asia, it was an evil military empire...the Americans had to win unconditionally, Their military was every bit as evil as the Nazis in Europe...we have a hard time knowing what our parents and grandparents went thru in WW2 and they werre overwhelmed by it as well...it really was a do or die situation...by the way Tokyo may have lost 120,000 people in 2 days in standard fire bombing more than either cities that were hit with nuclear...and about 20 cities were fire bombed with 10,000 to 80,000 dead in each...if we hadn't dropped the nukes, they would not have surrendered...hind sight is 20/20,,,would you have gone all out and ended the war with Nukes to save a few million people (not aware of the lingering radiation) I agree regretfully with the dropping of the bomb, but it would certainly be evil to use it in any standard war...100,000,000 people lost their lives in WW2 and probably 3 times that were injured or damaged in some way
