It could be that you need to replace the ignition cylinder (they're famous for failing on Grand Ams - been there done that with my '99 Grand Am). It also could be a wiring issue too.

I would get it looked after right away as you may get stranded over this problem. Sometimes when the security light comes on your car won't start up again after you turn it off.

If you do get stranded in that fashion (your car won't start up after you've turned it off), there is one thing you can do that some have suggested might get you home.

You can do what's called a 'reset for the theftlock system' - your owner's manual might mention something about it too.

Turn the key to the "on" position for 10 minutes, then turn the key to "off" and then start and it should work.

It's really inconvenient to wait the 10 minutes but there is a chance you could get your car to start again that way. If you were able to get your car started that way though, it's not something that I would count on regularly. If you have an ignition cylinder issue, it's just going to get worse if it isn't fixed, to a point where your car won't start up at all one day, no matter what technique you try. Good luck!

The very first thing to do is to get the codes checked to see which sensor string has acted up. You need to act as this might cause you to be stranded and very soon as this is an anti-theft feature that will disable the car. Most of these cars are found to have a faulty ignition switch, it is resistance in the contact area inside the switch, and it is a known intermittent condition as it only acts up when the resistance through the contacts affects the circuit. If you have an aftermarket theft or auto-start system, these are usually the cause by introducing a resistance into the circuit by default of the extra and usually poorly installed wiring and components. Get it checked out, dealerships usually will check codes and offer advice free of charge. Good luck.
