I work at a poor elementary school, and I want to work with the kids, some don't have good homelife's, and I wish people would wake up and look around, they are tomorrow. Give them the time to do something, to live up to the impossible. Don't put them into a catagory, don't say they can't live up too it. You have no idea what they are capable of. Just protect the people of tomorrow.

If the world had more teachers like you, it would be better off! And people would be amazed what improvements in the world would begin to take place!

That's a good thing for you to do, and it is true most people are just material people and don't look around or down where people need from others. I do the same thing with kids at my daugther's school if they need clothes or any other thing I get together with some other mom's and collect good second hand clothes so they can wear or shoes even school supplies.Like for Christmas we did a dinner for the kids and the families and gave them little presents and they were so happy. I think this is a good way to teach our kids values and that $$$ and material things are not so important than it looks... Like you said this kids are the future and they can be someone important in the future.. GOOD LUCK I support the way you want to help this kids !!!!

OK, good question! As you know, many times, parents in a poor area have to work hard, long hours just to make ends meet. The local, state and national governments do not provide after-school services, or good in-school experiences for the kids. So it is up to the community. Local businesses can sponsor sports or arts programs. It requires some person or persons to take the initiative, and make the calls, visits and generally commit the time for the benefit of the kids. Often the local church, synagogue ashram or mosque can provide safe space for the kids activities, and also a place to appeal to the parents for their help.

I am a Paraprofessional and have been for 14 years. May I
offer some advice? Don't get pulled into the students' home life.
You will cease to be effective. All you can do is teach them
to read, write and hopefully think. That is the best thing you can do for them. Encourage them to try and never give up trying.
Cheer their successes. Be in their corner. They will love you forever. Sadly, this nation will always have kids from broken,
disfunctional homes. Teachers are there to teach the kids.
The social workers, lawyers, and judges are suppose to fix
the broken homes. You need to learn to send the kids home
at the end of the day.

You obviously are a caring person and even though it seems that families are falling apart all it takes to make a lasting impression is one person. You may be that person who treats your students for the first time with the respect and interest they deserve. Remember those commercials they used to show where TV celebrities talked about the teachers who made the most impact in their life? Continue to be who you are but don't burn yourself out trying to make it right for everyone. If you don't take care of yourself you will have nothing more to give! There are other people out there like you, you are not alone.

I love what Shadow Queen (the paraprofessional) has to say! I dont teach, my husband does, in a very poor urban area, and it is true, you can give these children a feeling of self-worth when they are with you....you cannot battle ALL the bad homes and bad parents out there...theres just too damn many....focus on the kids you see in your classroom, when you see them... and take a deep breath and try and forget what they go home to.

Right on !!!! I agree. I think you are terrific!!!! Even if you don't work with the schools there are still plenty of ways people could help. More people should volunteer their time.
