Is there evidence that the events described in the story actually occurred? And would there have been reasons for inventing such a man as Joseph had he not existed?

Yes there was a famine. The Ancient Egyptians were excellent record keepers. There have been many references to the famine in archeological findings.

It is thought that Joseph was Imhotep of Egypt. In 1890 a boulder was found on Sahal Island at the Nile carved out how Imhotep saved his country from famine, was a sculptor of the limestone quarry, priest and healer.

Evidently, the connection with Joseph is the part "saved country from famine."

The best way to find out is to search Egyptian history. and when you do you will see that it did happen. all tho because of languish differences and the fact that Egyptians gave foragers new names that will not be his name. so the incident did occur but you will have to ignore the name translation problem.
