general things; first get a large breed puppy food. a large breed is anything that reaches a size of over 50lbs. at maturity and a lab will certainly reach that and more. the large breed part of the formula keeps them from growing too fast which can cause bone and joint problems.
second, look at the label and get something where the first ingredient, preferably the first 2 or 3 if possible, is meat or meat meal, like chicken or chicken meal. this ensures that the food is not made with mostly cheap filler ingredients like corn and soy. this way the dog will get better quality, more digestable protein.
also despite what you might sometimes hear you can switch foods every 4 months or so, my dog actually gets tired of her food sometimes so we ween her onto something different and just rotate in a new food every 4 to 6 months.
all that being said, here are some that i like and feel free to do a search for them online to see what you think and read reviews. Blue Buffalo, only available at Petsmart, Chicken Soup for the Large Breed Puppy's Soul, Innova, Nutro Ultra, Solid Gold. Do some research online, one of the most caring things you can do for a dog, besides tons of playtime, is feed them right. good luck!

Any good quality food that doesn't have cheap fillers & by products in it.
Steer away from IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Purina Puppy Chow,Pedigree and other supermarket brand foods. They are loaded with corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, by products & some even have chemical preservatives & dyes. They don't contain enough meat protein and it takes up to 3 times more for a dog/puppy to get the proper nutrition as it does a good quality meat based food without the fillers.
People need to remember that dogs are meat eaters, not grain/veggie eaters. They are designed to extract nutrition from meat proteins not grain/veggie.
Look for a food with meat as at least the first 2 ingredients.
Some good choices:
Chicken Soup for the puppy Lover's Soul, Canidae All Life Stages, Wellness, Solid Gold, Percise, Premium Edge just to name a few.

awwww your a lucky person. I remember when my little black lab. The breeder recommend Science Diet puppy food, chicken flavored is usually easier on the puppy's stomach so i would try that. Science diet can get pricey though so pedigree is a good back up once again puppy food it is needed to make sure the dogs bones and muscles grow properly, plus their is needed nutrients for the puppy in the puppy food

There are two ways to do it.
Buy one 40# bag of regular puppy kibble. When that bag is finished switch to a premium adult food.
Use "Large Breed" puppy kibble for the first 9-12 months, and then switch to a premium adult food.
You will here arguments both ways until the cows come home. Personally I think you accomplish the same thing both ways. Regular puppy kibble has proven to be to "hot" to keep Lab pups on for an extended period of time, and that is the point to avoid.

Puppy chow. Science Diet and Iams are both considered good over-the-counter brands. If you are willing to spend a bit more, your vet can prescribe other foods that are much better than anything you find at the pet store, but they are pretty expensive. Keep in mind that a lot of the store brands are made mostly of saw dust, so buy a good brand.

You want to find a good healthly dog food. When you purchase dog food look at the ingredients label and make sure that the first ingredient listed is some sort of meat such as beef, chicken, lamb, etc... Any dog food that begans with ground yellow corn is not good for your dog. I have feed my dogs Iams and it is a really good dog food. Any food that begans with ground yellow corn is just a filler and your dog will always feel extremely hungary. They will feel like they are being starved to death. Well good luck!
