It depends on what you mean by "getting in shape".

If getting in shape means "losing weight", NO pilates and yoga don't do it UNLESS you diet.

If getting in shape means "building endurance muscles", YES they do it.

If getting in shape means "building fast muscles", NO they don't.

I LOVE BOTH YOGA & PILATES!! I do pilates every night it's awesome keeps you really flexible & works you over nice & good. But in order to stay real fit I also run every morning for 1 hour. I suggest you mix yoga or pilates with a good cardio. It'll tone you up & cardio will have the weight coming off of you!!!

GOOD LUCK!!! (if you can't do all of the moves or stretches in yoga don't feel bad sometimes it takes a while for your body to adjust to some of the moves, the more you do it the better you'll get!)

Hey,
Yoga can be a great friend in every diet. It's all about hormones balance. There are no "bad" hormones. But when hormones get unbalanced, bad things happen in your body. Your body releases cortisol when you're under stress. It's part of the whole “fight or flight” response. Increased cortisol levels could be making you fat. The kind of fat you are most likely to store from elevated cortisol is called visceral fat — the dangerous belly fat that’s linked to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

I'm following this great online program that teaches how to use YOGA to lose weight. You should check it out as well. This is the link of the site: http://yogafitness.toptips.org

yes they both are. I prefer yoga over pilates, but that is just me. I also will run on the treadmill for at least 22 minutes before I do yoga...just for an extra calorie burn!!

I do yoga it is a great way to get into shape. I can feel my skin tightening and the deep breathing helps me remember things better. Yoga has many benefits and it is good for your health all around. Like safe on your fertility. Good luck!

it is a good way to get in shape and help relax but if you want to lose alot of weight it would be better to do something more in the way of cardio....yoga and pilates are not great fat burners but they are good to keep you agile....i would suggest mixing your yoga with some cardio (i do yoga and taebo/running for instance)
