The western world had manufactured goods in excess and sought markets to trade them, China had raw materials that the western world could use to manufacture salable items out of and that were in short supply (like rare woods, silk, tea, spices, rice, artworks, opium, jade, etc.)...in addition, due to political pressures and china's military weakness, the western world could set the rate of exchange greatly in it's favor. Admittedly, many of the products the western world offered were needed, but the price was exorbitant (real high).

Try reading the section that came with it.

It's 'century' not 'centery'.

And WHY? Think about the question you just asked. Why do people trade? BECAUSE THE TRADE-EE's HAVE SOMETHING THAT THE TRADE-R's WANT. Duh.

Trading is just their excuse behind their real motive to conquer. Didn't they conquer every country they traded with and put them under their empire?
