Why don't you do a combination of both. They are both great.

Actually Palates is a bit more strenuous which in turn speeds up your cardio which burns fat. Yoga on the other hand, builds muscle, helps with balance and increases flexibility. Since Pilate's is a mixture of yoga and a basic work out you will burn fat faster than yoga alone. If you really want to see drastic changes in weight loss, I suggest brisk walking for at least an hour or swimming which is very good for burning fat and it works all the muscles of the body at once. You may seek your own program which is geared toward your personal abilities. Just remember to check with your doctor before taking in any form of excercise programs to be on the safe side. Good Luck

Yoga is the best exercise physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This site below tells about it. Bikram's hot yoga is best for losing weight since it is 100 degrees. Site below explains how sweating helps you lose weight under LOSING WATER WEIGHT.
But the best thing to lose weigt specifically (note-- I have done yoga from age 12 but was never overweight) is bodybuilding. Site below tells why and how it can make women thin, not muscular. It is fastest growing exercise in the country with women.

it won't really help you LOSE weight, but it will tone you up. if you do yoga 3-4 times a week along with at least 20 minutes of cardio, you should start seeing a change in 4 weeks....you need to eat a healthy diet too, though!

Neither one of them will make you lose weight UNLESS you eat accordingly.
For sure neither one of them will make you lose fat, UNLESS you do cardio.
If you want a quick fix (ie something that burns calories while training the abs) do hula hoop instead.
I strongly suggest you to do weight training AND pilates, so to have a well shaped balanced body.
And remember, you can't overtake genetics! Pilates and yoga make you slender IF your body's muscle fibers are endurance one... weight training makes you bulky IF your body's muscle fibers are fast ones... you can't know it in advance (unless you have done some sports before and you know how your body reacts to different stimuli) and you need to experiment.
