The puffy tail is a natural reaction designed to make them appear bigger. Any situation that triggers their natural instinct to want to appear bigger will puff the tail. Fear, anger, fighting, play fighting, any situation where they may want to intimidate. If something startles them they'll puff up. When they're play fighting with another cat their tails will puff up. If they're being teased and not happy about it they will puff up their tail like "see how big I am, don't mess with me" and growl to say "I'll claw you."

My cat's tail puffs straight into the air when he is scared, angry, or when he is playing with me. He comes at me really slow with a puffy tail and attacks playfully - so cute!

Right this moment my Cat's tail is puffed because he is in what I have termed Mode:5 - Mount. Saint Helens Mode. Extreme play and maximum alertness. He is running from the bedroom to the living room, flying over the couch and ocassionally attacking my feet and his toy ball. So it's not just fear but any kind of excitable emotional state.

My cat's does when she's angry or scared but her tail also puffs out when I'm giving her a lot of attention and scratching. Otherwise, I agree with most of the previous answers.

Yes, usually. Although when cats are cold they tend to puff up their fur a bit also to help insulate them. If it happens all of a sudden and your cat arches it's back, it's scared and trying to look tough.

No. It's a combination of self-defense, and to make them look more feirce when they are in a fight. They do this so other predators or animals will think that they are "bigger" than them. that's why they puff up their tails.

while a cat is scared, it somewhat is going to "bush up" its tail to make itself seem larger to predators. it additionally will arch its back, lay its ears back, and blow his own trumpet the fur around its face.
