A patient has fallen very ill and has been advised to take exactly one pill of medicine X and exactly one pill of medicine Y each day, lest he die from either illness or overdosage. These pills must be taken together. The patient has bottles of X pills and Y pills. He puts one of the X pills in his hand. Then while tilting the bottle of Y pills, two Y pills accidentally fall out. Now there are three pills in his hand. Because both types of pill look identical, he cannot tell which two pills are type Y and which is type X. Since the pills are extremely expensive, the patient does not wish to throw away the ones in his hand. How can he save the pills in his hand and still maintain a proper daily dosage?

You have 3 pills (1-X and 2-Y). Cut all three pills in half and put them in 2 piles so you have:

pile 1 = 1/2-X, 1/2-Y, 1/2-Y

pile 2 = 1/2-X, 1/2-Y, 1/2-Y

Now take out a single X pill and cut it in half and add it to the 2 piles so you now have:

pile 1 = 1/2-X, 1/2-X, 1/2-Y, 1/2-Y

pile 2 = 1/2-X, 1/2-X, 1/2-Y, 1/2-Y

So now pile 1 and pile 2 are exact daily dosages.

Put the pills in his hand in a plastic bag and take to the doctor for analysis on which is which, and for today take one more X and one more Y out of their jars and take them. You said he wanted to save the pills. You did not say the patient had to take them today :)

The answerer before me almost had it..... he would set those 3 pills aside and take out different pills and when he got to the end he would have one pill in the bottle of one kind and 2 In the other.

so.... the kind with only one pill left would be the one that doubled on that fateful day....

first he should put them down, so he doesn't accidently spill out more than one, when he adds another X pill to the mix

So he now has two X pills and two Y pills

cut them all in half and take 1/2 of each pill

save the other halfs for tomorrow

in the future he should try one of those daily dose boxes, ha ha

JUST PUT THOSE PILLS HE DROPPED, IN A CONTAINER OF SOME SORT. AND TAKE A PILL FROM EACH OF THE DIFFERENT BOTTLES,CONTINUE UNTIL HE IS ALMOST DONE AND GET A REFILL .

YOU DO GET A REFILL BEFORE YOU RUN OUT OF MEDS.

SO HE CAN CONTINUE THIS FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.
