SMOG was a word that was born when the Environmental Protection Agency and the CALIF. Dept. of Consumer Affairs began looking at the eye stinging, purple-ish colored clouds that were traced back to the excessive accumulation of automotive exhaust gases collecting over the Los Angeles Basin in the early 1960s. The word "SMOG" comes from combining the word "FOG" with the word "SMOKE".
