First thing, patience. Second, competency.

You need patience to understand that losing fat is not as impressive and fast as losing muscle/water is. So it takes 1 week to lose 1 pound. And you need to keep going in absence of huge detectable effects.

You need competency to read around and determine:
*how much fat you have (body composition)
*your body type
*how much fat you need to lose (target goal)
*how many calories you need basing on all of the above (body composition, body type, target goal)
*how many calories per day you can avoid eating without going in starvation mode (usually 15-20% of your caloric daily needs calculated on body composition)
*your maximal heart beat rate
*how much cardio your body is going to be able to take (you need at least 22 minutes walking/running with a heart beat that is 70-75% your maximal rate --- that's "where" you burn the fat)
*a weight training workout (building more muscle means being able to burn more fat)
*how to use the protein supplements to maximize muscular growth
*how to eat in a healthy way

Good luck!
