If the mole is brown, symmetrical and smaller than the size of a pencil eraser--there is nothing to worry about.
If it is black, asymmetrical OR larger the an eraser size, see a Dermatologist immediately.
If you do not currently see a Dermatologist, I would suggest you see one every three years or so to check for Melanoma, or other skin cancers that may appear--especially if you are over 30, have a light complexion, or grew up in a temperate, sunny environment.

Moles can develop "out of the blue" from time to time. However, you should watch for changes-in size, color, (not just to black-- I had melanoma and part of the mole changed to pink), raised and irregular edges, just to name a few. In your case I would check it out my a dermatologist. Having it on your fingertip could cause chronic irritation, which is a good reason to have it removed anyway.
I grew up in the Bay Area, had frequent sunburns as a child. I am fair skinned. I got melanoma when I was 22 from a mole that just appeared on my leg. I watched it for about 6 months, and by then I was in trouble. I had extensive surgery,46 lymph nodes removed from my groin, and chemotherapy. It was a terrifying and very painful experience.
Melanoma can be very serious, even fatal. I beat the odds they gave me for survival (50/50 at best). I'm now 51 years old, get my skin checked regularly, and have a lot of scars. Sure beats the alternative, though!
Take care of yourself by getting it checked--what you don't know can kill you.
Best wishes,
Liz (RN)

I'd get it checked just to be safe. Being that is on a finger tip the Dr. might want to take if off for your comfort.

if it starts growing, whether it stays flat or not, get it checked...if it stays the same, its probably ok...if you feel any pain or irritation in that area, you might wanna see someone on that...better safe than sorry
