My three year old son dropped a fairly heavy toy train on his toe a few hours ago- he really screamed and went on crying for a while and his toe-nail turned purple almost immedietely. He's been limping and since going to bed has been waking up clearly in considerable pain. I've given him calpol and he's settled for now. I'm not sure whether to take him to the Doctors tomorrow as I know toe injuries usually right themselves and I don't know wether or not to send him to nursery and generally how seriously I should take it. He won't let me put ice or anything on it, but I'm worried because the toe is starting to swell. Any advice...?

He needs to go to hospital Accident and Emergency because he will get quick help there. He may have a blood blister under his nail which will need drilling to reduce the pressure and pain. It happened to my son when he was little. If you can-please take him to hospital tonight.

What you are describing is a subungual haematoma - a bruise under the nail. It is very painful. Medical treatment is to drill a wee hole in the nail to let the blood out and release the pressure which is causing him pain. If he is still awake and won't settle take him to Accident & Emergency for this to be done tonight as by tomorrow the blood will have clotted and nothing can be done. We don't routinely x-ray toes unless it is the big toe as they usually heal quickly on their own. Simply painkillers like paracetamol syrup (Calpol/Tylenol) will make him less pained. Ensure you read the label and give the correct dose.

Probably just bruised and in time his toe nail will come off. The pain should go away withing 12 hours and the swelling will go down. See a doctor to check that the toe is not broken.

Elevating the foot on some pillows and not allowing him to bear weight on the injured side will help. Ice packs would help even more because it helps numb the area and reduce the swelling. You can give him Children's Tylenol to help with the pain, too. Short of that, you should get him to an urgent care center or take him to his pediatrician in the morning. They will xray it to make sure it isn't fractured. Worst case scenario, the toe could be broken...

It seems to me that the toe isn't getting blood down too it. My toes did that after my car accident, of course so did my finger nails, only the ones on the left side did. I would TAKE HIM TO THE DOCTOR as soon as possible. Do not wait, if he gets taken to the doctor's then you possible won't get charged with child abuse, but it might be questionable if you send him to take care without taking him to the doctor's. Good luck.

ok stay calm
my daughter did much the same at 3
to be safe don't go to see your gp but a & e hoping your local hospital has a childrens section of a& e
they can run x-rays to see if he has brocken or chiped the bone

swelling and colour change is normal for any toe injury at this young age
so i found out with my panic with my daughter

your doing ok at the mo.
calpol is great but if you have any neurofen children then give him some of that too

you can use both together as they are compatable for heavy pain as your son is having

yeah i fell down the steps a few months ago and broke my pinky toe, and it does hurt alot when you break it, and walking on it it may make it worse(thats what happened to me) so if it gets worse then you should take him to his doctor to get it checked out. But for now, theres probably not a whole lot that you can do about it...just make sure he stays off of it. but then again, he is 3 so his bones are alot more fragile so yeah take him to a doctor

my toenail went purple then fell off - it was horendous! he's only 3 he'll be in a bit of pain to walk on it. See how he is tomorrow if it's bothering him keep him home. he might have forgotten the pain by tomorrow, but if your at all woried see the doctor. If he's in pain and wont settle why not take him to a&e theyll sort him out.

the toe will bruise immediately after. the selling should go down, if by morn it hasn't then think about getting him checked. he's fine for nursery if he can get his shoes on. Broken toes nowerdays aren't even strapped. Dont worry, i bet he's already asleep. Dont listen to scarey story's that people say. He'l be fine. x

There is not much one can do about toe injuries! It is very possible that he has broken the toe ... I would suggest you wait until the morning, but if things look worse .. take him to A&E!
