I got some idea from here about 4 months ago and it worked. I had been picking my fingernails for about 30 years. The suggestions made to me was to carry a finger nail file and clippers so that if they became uneven, then I could fix them. I went and bought some of that nasty tasting stuff to put on them from Wal-mart. You will find it in the fingernail polish area. It is called "Nail Bite" or something like that. I also take calcium so they are strong. I put on that clear nail strengthener so they won't break. I do feel that I have broke the habit now.

You probably have some kind of hidden psychological problem. Most likely you bite your nails when you are thinking about something. It is related to your reaction which is the biting of your nails. If you don't have the will power to just stop then call your local county health dept. they have a mental health expert that can help you and you do need help.

Get a manicure at one of the most expensive spas. Once you see that you have paid so much to keep the nails beautiful, you automatically stop biting it. Use manicure as an incentive for your efforts. It works wonders. It helped me too.
