I have no idea if it is effective or not, i do know that the applied techniques can be powerful when used it's just the fact of actually using them, i mean using long fist kung fu in a fight here in north america would not be a very good idea, and it is not an american made up fu, it is just an extrelmely flashy style of kung fu with lots of high kicks and such. Long range attacks, it's really cool i would like to learn it just for the hell of it, not for solid self defence training of course, i read a bit about it on wikipedia, that is an amazing website.

Long Fist is showy and flowery. It is a great exercise and really cool but if you really want to win a fight learn boxing, kick boxing or Muay Thai. What long fist has over the others is that it is more than just fighting skills. It develops your mental, physical, balance and spiritual more than most martial arts

im not familiar with this style of kung fu but just to say ju jitsu is generally one of the most effective martial arts for street situations as it deals with grappling, ground attacks and striking moves which can be applied better in real life situations and have maximal effect. it also tends to be pretty hardcore and is an offshoot of ninjitsu.

it depends what you have in your long fist and how hard your pulling it.
and the person that does a style of kung fu that apparently knows everything (she knows who she is) how much street experience did you say you had?how many fights outside the dojo?

It's effective only against DD nerds and little kids. However a star trek geek would have easy time beating those who try to use Long Fist.

Out of those, Southern Fist will be most easily applied for self-defense. White Crane is the best on that list, in my opinion, because of it's heavy emphasis on internal. Chi Na is not a kung-fu style, it's a sub-set of kung fu and is present in every style. Chi Na is the joint locks and small joint manipulations. Black Tiger and Northern Fist would have the best strength traiing workouts. Monkey has good leg workouts. Drunken Fist is a theatrical style. Praying Mantis is either Southern or Northern, but its focus is speed and trapping.

I know exactly which art you're talking about. Long fist is what we all see in martial arts movies--the acrobatic movements that are fun to watch. The answer to your question is: no. It is not effective. Even Lian Jie, or Jet Li as we call him, will tell you it is the non-sparring form of martial arts. It is excellent for choreographed fight scenes, but not in the least for real-life scenarios. A butterfly kick, for example, is bad; the first time you hit something solid with that kick, you'll face-plant.

it's as effective as any other Martial Art is if you put enough time and effort in your training.
it comes down to how effective the PERSON is when using the discipline's techniques and not the discipline itself.

it definitely can be.
it depends on who is teaching and whether they understand the concepts behind the movements and knows how to abbreviate the movements, making them efficient and applicable to real world self defense.
