not just a wimp, but the worst kind. His job was to be a leader, and watch out for his troops, not to desert them. His oath is to uphold the orders that are given to him, not countermand them. We are not in a democracy in the US military, and you know that going in. Of course being in the infantry means that you allready know that at some point your skills will be called upon, and especially as an officer. He is a coward, and a dessenter, and I firmly believed that if he deployed he would have got some of us killed. He needs to be in prison for however long they can legally keep him, forfeiture of pay, and be made to pay back everything that the governemnt paid to him, benefits and education included. He needs to be made an example, especially since he is an officer.

Sounds like a real republican. I have no real qualms with that however. He definitely is an idiot for signing up in the first place. There is no justification in saying that you'll only serve in the military for such and such reasons (apparently because he believed that the WMD threat was realistic enough). What's even worse is that his argument lacks a base. He is trying to put on the stand whether congressional approval for the war was motivated by the claims of existing WMDs. Regardless whether it was or was not, the war had congressional approval. End of story, yes this is a very cowardly act of desperation. Off you go to prison!
Theres only one thing I'm wondering about left. Osama bin Laden? Where is HE on the news? It's just Iraq Iraq Iraq. The 9/11 was blamed on bin Laden and yet we have done nothing to look for him. See how all this builds up? First 9/11, stock market dramatically falls. A lot of investors sell short (betting against a stock) and make a profit. The war is approved and we invade Afghanistan to 'look for Osama.' And THEN this here is the magical part. The Bush administration LINKS Saddam Hussein to terrorist funding. But we don't invade Iraq for this reason. Not at all. There are claims of WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION (lovely phrase isn't it?). This is why America invades Iraq. And yet there is no news of bin Laden. 'Apparently' he is dead or so reports say. This is just deadly. You can really see the media swinging in the direction of politicians. The media really affects people even if you don't believe people watch news. Hussein is dead now, thank goodness, but now Iraq is practically under U.S. control. Middle east country is good for what now? OIL. Yet our oil prices continue to remain high? I believe it all comes down to money. Stinking politicians are trading our lives for money.
Watada is a coward, but even I believe protesting this war is correct. His actions were unacceptable in terms of what the purpose of the military is. There are just better ways of achieving this goal.

I am a US army veteran. I did my time for 3 years. I was one of the FEW asian americans all the bases I was stationed at.
Although I respect his opinion, I do think he should finish his term. He did sign a contract. The drill sergeants did say "IF YOU DONT WANT TO DIE IN WAR THEN GET OUT NOW" in basic training.
For him to deny orders is not a good thing. I disagree with the war and I don't think it should be fought, but I do think he should obey orders.
That is a disgrace that he doesn't. People already have a negative view of asians in the military (weak, not physically strong) and this only makes the stereotype worst for asian men. I did my time and finished my term, so what makes him so special?

Son,
Take that "son' as an indication that if you were in a troop formation in front of me that is what I would call you other than by your rank and surname if I wanted to make a point.
First, you have no idea how seriously the US Army takes an application to be a "CO" Conscientious Objector.
It goes back to the Civil War and then to 1866? Sand Creek, Colorado and the refusal of an officer to kill women and children (Native Americans).
The Army In WWII and Vietnam has three Medal Of Honor recipients who were CO's, all medics. In other words, this post - question belongs on another area: not military.
Everything is "lib demos", "the left', get a life, join the military, ask a soldier or two.
The Army is "Army family" we, well I am retired, try to sort out the bs and see the truth.
War and killing is no joke.

He is claiming to be a Concious Objector, he is not. If he was he would believe it to be wrong to take anothers life. He has plead his case all wrong if he really is one. Just because his personal morals now dont agree with this war doesnt qulify him for CO status. Even so him being a CO doesnt mean you cant serve. Some CO feel it is allright to support a mission just not to directly be involved in the taking of a human life.
He is not though so he will end up in prison.

He has the main suitable to decline because of the fact at end of the day, what's he battling for, freedom, freedom to decline, to declare specific, to have a voice, yet you're suited to declare "the U. S. government can't enable Watada to set an occasion for something the people interior the U. S. protection rigidity. think of if a million/2 of the U. S. squaddies in Iraq desperate to cease because of the fact all of them felt that the Iraq conflict became unlawful too...." and then what if. that is extremely confusing to respond to, it like a double part sword. Him being a protection rigidity guy is confusing, they don't play politics, they do what they get informed to do, yet that doesn't propose they don't think of. that is on his concepts if he did something that he theory became unlawful. yet you will possibly desire to do want should be carried out, climate you like it or not. As former Secretary of State Colin Powell suggested (i think of it became him) in terms of Iraq "you harm it, you purchase it". climate the conflict in Iraq is criminal or not, the wear has been carried out and now it desires fixing. playstation . Why does the protection rigidity not deliver him to Afghanistan rather. Ehren Watada (to what I extremely have examine) is a proud American and is prepared to combat al-Qaeda , he purely would not prefer to head to Iraq for ethical motives.

the real wimp is George Bush who declared the war on terrorism! he's the biggest terrorist and he should be hanged!
First Lt Ehren Watada is excercising his freedom of speech and has the right not to go to Iraq!
It is not his war! It's not a war at all! It's a bogus war, to ingeniously tricked the US citizens, it's just a mean for the Bush administration to get the hold of the Iraqi oil!
why fight outside of US while the US citizens still afraid of their own shadows!?
For others who didn't serve in the uniform, you guys don't have the right to criticize Watada! Why don't you guys sign up and take the responsiblities!?! What a bunch of cowards criticizing others!
(p/s: BTW, I'm not a US citizen BUT I'm a already reservist for my country)

my thoughts exactly! I think I'll join the ARMED FORCES , get assistance w/ income, job training, education, housing, health insurance etc., and then say, well, I want the job and all the titles and benefits, but I don't think I actually should have to DO the job. And, by the way, no one else should either. AND, I'm supporting those people by being an idiot.

He is courageously fighting for what he believes is right and standing up against pretty much everyone, which makes him the exact opposite of a coward. I agree with you that what he did is wrong because he is breaking the law and he did choose to serve in the military, but he is not a coward.
