Toasted Head Chardonnay (It has a bear on the label). This was the wine that renewed an interest in Chardonnay (four years ago). The reason it renewed an interest in Chardonnay was that it was one of the first large produced Chardonnays made in what is now known as "new style Chardonnay". New style Chardonnay is a term used to describe a style of California Chardonnay that has flavors and aromas of crisp apple, crisp pear and a hint of butter and oak. This style is not a big buttery, oaky Chardonnay.

The Toasted Head Chardonnay allows one to have a little of each fruit, and butter. It generally retails for under $12.

You cant go wrong with "BV" it is consistant, which is a plus for wines under $15. Also, try Mondavi's, there are a few different ones ranging from $8 - $20 on a supermarket shelf.

One thing to watch for... Wines are often stored in the back of the market in an uncontrolled climate. I have found that if the price is real low there is a possibility of overstock and spoiling. If you open it and it is offensive or the first sip sets you back, dont drink it - return it (keep your reciept).

Have fun, I have learned alot about Chardonnays and I started out at a supermarket too.

Instead of going for a new world chardonnay try buying a white burgundy from France. They are all made with chardonnay (although it wont say this on the label). They tend to be a bit more subtle than many of the Australian, USA etc chardonnays.

Depends on your supermarket. Go to the wine department and look on the top shelf- do you see $20-$30 chards? Try one! The afore-mentioned Cambria is a good one at about $15 or so. Also Georges Dubeouf's Pouilly-Fuisse, if you want to see what French chard tastes like. No offense to the other respondents, but Kendall-Jackson, Clos du Bois, and Penfolds are mass-market wines, and taste like it. You can do better. Experiment a little and find one you like and can comfortably afford. My personal fave is Rombauer, but at $30 I don't drink it often. My supermarket carries Far Niente, but at $39 I"ve never splurged. Remember, life is too short to drink bad wine. Salud!

Penfolds or Rosemount from Australia.

Forget the junky export wines like Nottage Hill, Wolf Blass, Jacob Creek.
