Well that's kind of hard to say. If you want digital there are pro formats, but I'd suspect that's not what you want. i.e. the full DV not miniDV.

It really depends on your camera and microphone as to how good or bad your picture will be. Pro's use lights, decent microphones, and good lenses. Hackers like us, buy it at the corner store and shake when we film.

Practically speaking the DV formats whether mini dv or 8mm are the way to go. If you go analog you have to convert when transferring to your computer.

Yes. You have 3 choices. Hard drive based, mini dv based and mini DVD based formates. All 3 have a High Definition based camcorder too. The most user friendly is mini DVD but has very limited editing options (what you shot is what you get). Tape is better if editing is what you want. This also is applies for the HD models.

MiniDV offers the best quality and ease of editing. Dvds offer ease of watching what you shot, and HDD cams offer the ability to not buy media to store your video on, although youll probably buy dvds to burn them on anyways. And both of them have MPEG-2 compression, which is more compressed (lower quality) than miniDV. Hope this helps!
