I have heard a lot of rumors about Jell-O being made out of crushed bones. Is there any truth to this rumor? If you supply an answer, could you also mention where you found your answer or how you know it. Thanks! :)

The production of gelatin typically starts with the boiling of cattle bones or pig skins; contrary to popular conception, horns and hooves are not used. This material is then soaked with acid or alkali in large vats to extract and hydrolyze the protein collagen. The extract is then dried and ground to form a powder.

To make gelatin desserts, typically powdered gelatin is mixed with sugar, and additives such as adipic acid, fumaric acid, sodium citrate, and artificial flavorings and food colors. Very hot water is added to swell the powdered gelatin and gel the liquid. The dessert gels slowly as it cools.

Because the collagen is processed extensively, the final product is not categorized as a meat or animal product by the US federal government.

Well, yes, those other answers do account for the Jell part of Jell-O which is infact Gel made from the Collagen in Bones, but what about that oh-so-mysterious O?!? what is the O excatly? my guess, and this is totally wild speculation... is that the O in Jello could only stand for... Orphans... Hmm... maybe not... allthough that would explain the new Soilant Green Jell-O... just kidding!

If you look at the ingredients on a box of Jell-O, you'll see that it's essentially sweetened, flavored, and colored gelatin. Gelatin is basically processed collagen, which is a structural protein in animals' connective tissue, skin, and bones. Collagen also makes up about one-third of all the protein in the human body. Collagen is composed of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, as well as other amino acids.
