There are many sprays available like bitter apple spray, which cats hate the taste of. Or tabasco cause if you can do so without staining your rug.

Squirt the cat with a water bottle if you catch him in the act (try not to let him see it was you, as you don't want him to associate the water bottle with you).

Give him other toys and distract him with them once he stops chewing on something else. Catnip, krinkly balls, laser pointer, etc.

All cats don't do this, but I do have a house bunny (a free running bunny which is litterbox trained and acts basically like a cat) and he does chew cords. At home depot, they sell actual cord covers, or you can also find a cheaper item which I don't know the name of, but its like a ribbed plastic tubing, with a slit down one side, then you snap that over any wires or cables. Its like $2 for a big pack of it. Just check the covers here and there and make sure hes not chewing thru it. Also a bitter spray would probably help, but cord covers are so, so important either way. My aunts cat chewed my cousins playstation cord, and when they got home that evening they smelled something burning and looked, the playstation was up in flames. Thank god it didn't happen until they were getting home that evening. If it happened when they were still gone for the day the house would have burned down. My aunt was able to smother the fire in a blanket and put it out just in time. It could have been a disaster. Not sure how old your cat is but my aunts cat began chewing cords only once she turned 18. I guess shes getting a little senile. But I know lots of cord chewing cats, I have been lucky enough to not have a cord chewer, besides the bunny. But all bunnies do that. Ohhhh and if you have a specific area which has a lot of cords, you may be able to block off a section. Like with my entertainment center, I took all of the cords and put them down behind the ent. center. Then I bought some chicken wire and made like basically a barricade out of it, so the bunny can't get under there and to the wires. You could use wood or something too. If you use chicken wire make sure there aren't sharp edges and make sure its positioned in a way that kitty can't get stuck or tangled in it. Good luck.

You can buy cat repelent at the pet store and there are some home remedies, too. Cats hate the scent of citrus so you can run an orange slice down the length of cords, etc. And they also don't like Tobascco sause so you can rub some of that on the cords, too.

the pet store has items to put on cords and all that but you can try vaseline followed by some Tabasco or hot sauce

the vaseline is sweet alone so they will like it but its needed to keep the hat stuff on the cord.

not really neat but it does work and when they stop chewing chords you can stop putting the stuff on and wipe it all off.

My cat seems to like to play with cords but not eat them.
another thing he likes to do for X-mas is sleep under the x-mas tree ...........right on top of the power cord lol

You shoud spray on the cords some pepper, hot chilly, something hot and spicy anyway. The cat will try one time, she will hate it. The secod time, the same result. Maybe the third time too, but the cat will learn to stay as far as possible from the "hot" cords. I had a cat, I applied the same method and it worked.

Hi Hope...for deterring inappropriate cat behaviour around electrical wires consider using a cable wire loom to bundle up the the wires. The loom is very inexpensive and not only does it prevent the cat from tangling in the wires, but also tidies the area up as well. Cable Organizer Wire Loom: http://cableorganizer.com/wire-loom/

For the wires that are difficult to bundle consider using a pet-friendly deterrent spray-on product called Grannick's Bitter Apple® http://www.grannicks.com . It is a citrusy scent that once a cat tastes will generally avoid those areas which have that particular odour.

Let it chew till it shocks itself?

Just kidding, I do love cats. I'd say go with the sprays (bitter apple).
