Do you want to risk losing the scholarship due to those 19 words? I'd go through it and comb out those 19 words if I were you.

Unfortunately most scholarship programs now put your essays through a scanner and use OCR to determine whether you've exceeded the word limit or not. It's estimated that as many as 22% of scholarship applications are rejected outright because people's sob stories about their mother having boob cancer ran on 5, 10 words over the limit.

Normally I would say that it doesn't matter because if they count words then they might be a bit loony and you may not want to go there...but in today's world you have to do anything within fairness to give yourself an edge.

I know is seems far fetched but if there is one spot left and they are deciding between you and another candidate, they may use the fact that you exceeded the word count as a way to say that you didn't follow instruction and downgrade you.

I'm sure that if you condense or re-word a few sentences you can get your essay within the word limit.

Best of luck!

That's silly. 19 words over is fine. Nobody wants to sit and count the words, and they don't care about that. They just give a number of words as a guide. The content is what counts. Grammer, spelling, and punctuation come in second. Word count - any thing in the ballpark is fine.

Most times, 19 words won't make any difference. They will be judging your essay on the content. Generally, word limits are to prevent them from receiving "books" instead of essays. I highly doubt that they will take the time to count each and every word in your essay.

Usually the avegare words are counted by multiplying the numbers of lines by the average number of words per line...

So if you have 30 lines with 10 words per line= 300 words...

I dont think 19 words above the line will be of a matter.

It depends on the institution but where it is in relation to a potential scholarship award, most institutions require consistent standards for evaluation to be sure that all applicants are treated equally.

If they stated a word limit it is best to observe it. Chances are that when they come down to making the final decisions if you were in the group of finalists, you could be disqualified for not observing the rule.

They usually like it to be within the limit..I bet if you proofread and reorganize and restate a few things you can drop 19 words.

If not, being 19 words over will not kill your chances.
