Not to worry. In cases like this it's often common to put our own feelings as representing our pets. Yes it is true that your dog will miss his best friend.
But don't forget, dogs are easily distracted by something new. I'll always adore them for that fault. lol
You can do this by either finding a new owner and creating walk and play times together or in a group setting.
Or find a completely new fun habitat for your dog to explore. Though you must remember your dog reacts mostly from you.
You have to show some excitement or extra interest too. Or you'll both be miserable.
Personally I found altering my routines and play times a great help. My dog met new friends and she absolutely loves the new play times because there were more dogs to greet and interact with that she never noticed before.
I hope this helps.

There isn't anything you can say to your dog to make him understand. He may miss his friend once he leaves, but you should both keep yourselves busy when your friends move away. Meet other dogs and other humans, go to the park often, take long hikes, car rides out into the country, etc.
Don't let it get you down; you will all miss each other, but the key to moving on and making new friends is to be active, busy, and social.

when my labs best friend died he was young and living in a custom built log house so he was an outside dog back then, he would cry and howl on and off all day and night, the fire man who lived next door soon learned to see if there was an actual alarm going off or if it was the dog, we all tried to make him feel better, then after 4 months of me and the dog crying my father in law got fed up he went and got me a beagle pup, we were both happy, now she is his pet his baby if you will and he is happy 6 years later still loves his little buddy

I have no idea. maybe before the best friend moves away, find another playmate for your dog. let the three of them get acquainted and then when the one leaves, maybe it won't be so hard on your dog to have another friend around right away. Best of luck to both dogs!

Kidnap your friend and keep him and his dog in your basement. This way you and your dog will always have a friend at home.
