The NIV Student Bible is great for me. It's easy to read, yet not "dumbed down." It has great footnotes and highlights.
But, to each his own way. Have a great day!

I use four translations concurrently.
King James
New American Standard
New Living Translation
The Message.
When I do a deep study, I have all four translations out before me, and I read all of them.
For relaxed reading, I usually turn to the New American Standard. It is a literal translation, word for word, whereas the NLT and the Message is paraphrased.
It's a personal choice. I suggest you get several translations and read all of them. Compare the Scriptures. I get "fed" from all of them.

I have many Bibles, my favorite is "The New American Bible". It's in plain English and isn't confusing. It's actually a Catholic Bible though.

The NBV (Nieuwe Bijbel Vertaling), sorry, I'm Dutch! My version is easy to read and has some 'translation' errors which are in most Catholic versions (and not in KJV), but I'm aware of them so I don't fall over them any more.
