I have a 2 1/2 year old miniature schnauzer and he's so smart. He plays dead, rolls over, sits, just really smart. But we have a problem: he goes crazy when a new person comes over. He jumps all over them. He does not do this with my husband and I, he only jumps on folks that aren't my husband and I. How can we stop this? I hate jumping dogs but love my schnauzer!!

When someone comes over:

1) Put him on leash
2) Make him sit or down/stay. He can't be jumping if he is holding a stay.
3) When he is sitting/lying quietly, reward him. DO NOT release him if he is not staying quietly, wait until he settles. He needs to learn that sitting quietly is the only way to be released.

lol do you have my schnauzer? she is the same way, except not terribly smart. what i have done is when someone comes over she goes on a leash and must sit and stay and become calm before i let her approach them. if she starts her schnauzer bouncing then she is immediatly corrected and made to sit and stay and become calm again. once she got the hint i was serious i was able to ditch the leash and just use voice command. now when somone comes in the door all i do is tell her to sit and she stays there until she's calm and then she can greet. and my guests are instucted not to pay attention to her should she jump on them. the best thing you can do is have a friend that she does this to, hang out at your door and work with her this way for several afternoons. be consistant. don't make acceptions for guests that don't mind, because it bothers you and it's just not dog politeness. good job otherwise and i hope this helps.

He needs a negative consequence (correction) when he does jump and you need to designate an appropriate reaction when someone comes in the door. Put him on his leash & collar, then open the door - either have him there on a sit, down the hall, in the next room - wherever YOU decide he needs to be. Get the new person in, have them ignore the door and don't allow him to say hi until he's calm. If he jumps, he needs a correction. Trick-training is NOT the same as responsible behavior. Many dogs do cute things - for food, etc. - but that isn't the same as being obedient. Obedient dogs look to you for reactions and approval BEFORE they act out - much as a follower-dog looks to a pack-leader. This is actually a VERY simple behavior to correct .... many, many of my clients have had the same thing - include the one with the 200# St. Bernard who jumped - imagine that one!! Good luck, be patient, persistant and calm!!

You probably have the gist of it by now - the dog needs to be calm and do something that prohibits jumping. I am going to springboard off the previous post that trick-training is not the same as responsible behavior, however. It all depends in how you look at it! There is no reason you can't have your pup "play dead" when people arrive. That is essentially a down-stay anyway - just with a cuter name. His reward for playing dead will be attention from your guests. Just make sure that he is not jumping when rewarded - he still needs to be calm. You are likely to have greater compliance from your guests, as well, if they think they are helping with a trick instead of "torturing" the dog or being mean by withholding attention.

When someone comes to the door, put him in a sit stay. Use his leash if necessary. When the person comes in, they are not to talk to, pet or make eye contact with him for the first couple of minutes. Let him then go up to the people to greet them. When he jumps, tell him "off" and you can either pull him down or some people like to lightly step on the dog's back toes. (You know your dog best and what he'll respond to) The person needs to stop all contact with him instantly if he jumps. With consistency, he'll learn what "off" means and that people will pet him when he's got all 4 feet on the ground.

Ok I just got a chihuahua puppy and have been trying to train her. I just put newspaper in the room she sleeps in on the floor and when I wake up, there will be poops on the newspaper AND some in other areas of the room on the carpet. I will shove her face in the ones on the carpet and yell. Then I will go in the other room and get on the couch and have her stay on the floor. If she whines or tries to climb up, I yell and tell her "NO IM MAD AT YOU YOU'RE A BAD PUPPY!!!!!" and I ignore her for like fifteen minutes. Chihuahuas are very small, so I try not to spank her. instead I have a spray bottle full of water. Now, when she goes to the restroom on the carpet I shove her face in it and yell, and then spray her with water. Then I show her the newspaper, shove her face in it and ignore her. Every time I yell at her for pooping on the carpet, I show her the newspaper. If I see her in the middle of pooping on the carpet, I will pick her up and bring her to the newspaper. If I wake up and nothing is on the carpet but there are poops on the newspaper, I will show her(SHOW her, not shove her face in it!) and then give her a treat and praise her. It takes a while but she is getting the hang of it. Mini schnauzer pups are very small, try spraying them with water in the face instead of hitting them.

You may try a leash but this could be difficult to get a hold of on short notice,,,, we use the kennel method,,,, when someone comes over we send our dogs to the kennel until they settle down, once they've calmed down we allow them out but if they start getting to excited we send them back to their kennels.
