Yesterday we got a courtesy ride from VW dealership to our house as my car needed some repairs. Well, after we got home, the driver of the shuttle got down and opened the door for us and was extremely courteous. I wanted to give him some tip, but we did not have cash on us. He was so well dressed that it made us get a complex looking at our attire LOL. Well that apart, if we had some cash how much would be appropriate to tip him? We will be going to the dealership tonight to pick up my car and I was planning to explain to him that we did not have cash on us and hence did not offer the gratitude. What do you guys think? Will it look like over reacting or inappropriate?

I've never tipped the courtesy drivers. Never even thought of it, and they've never given me any reason to think they expected it--they just drop me off and go.
Even if he is allowed to accept tips (which is doubtful), offering it later with that explanation would be tacky.
If you want to show your appreciation, I think the best thing would be to comment to his boss about what wonderful and courteous service he provided you. If you want to put it in writing and mail it, even better.

That is his job to make sure the dealership does not get sued if you hurt yourself getting out of the car.
If you really want to give him a tip, and don't want to make a big deal of it, then just fold a 5$ bill in your hand and quietly pass it to him while shaking his hand and commending him on his courteousness. Then walk away and leave it at that.

If you truly thought he was more than deserving of a tip, the best thing you can do is speak to the general manager and compliment the guy. Maybe it will help the guy will get a raise or a bonus.

Most likely he's not permitted to accept any sort of gratuity. I worked at an auto parts store and put a lot of wiper blades on for people. If they offered a tip we had to refuse it.

No, usually dealership do not allow them to accept cash. Indifferently when you purchased the car you paid for the service.

A handshake a warm "thank you" is all the tip he needs. I tip wait staff because their hourly wage is based on that. Everybody else get's at least minimum wage, so they don't get tipped.

Yes, a tip would be nice. Anything less than 5 dollars would be insulting.

Give him a good $10. That should do the trick.
