Does it really affect you, atheists? If you really believe what you say you do, according to what I know about it, you have no reason to care what other people believe about religion! If it doesn't hurt you, and it doesn't hurt those who do practice religion, why do you spend so much time trying to convert everyone else to atheism?

I understand if you're trying to "convert" someone/people who actually IS/ARE a personal threat to you, but why do you bother coming on Y/A R&S and debating?

Don't say it's because religious people are annoying. That's not a thoughtful answer.

I don't care what anyone's religion is as long as they try to keep it to themselves. The problem is that many religious people seem to believe that *everyone* must either follow their religion or be forced to live by it through the laws. In a secular society, this is unacceptable.

And, I personally come onto the R&S section to offer much needed facts and a different interpretation to some things that I see on here. If you only hear one voice speaking loudly about something, eventually that becomes THE voice. But religion and spirituality are not the sole property of christians and that is why I come to this forum.

Why should religious people be the only ones who debate religion? That's like saying poachers are the only ones who should discuss the legality of hunting.

Does it effect me? Well, yes actually - I find religion intellectually and aesthetically offensive - I don't appreciate religious people acting like they have all the answers when they hide behind ignorance and superstition and I don't like being told I'm going to hell even though it doesn't exist.

You can't convert someone to atheism - its not a thing, its a lack of a thing. I would say religion in the mind of a true atheist is replaced by responsiblity, honesty, morality and a love of truth.

Oh and religious people ARE annoying.

Some religious people are run of the mill moderate religious people and they do not bother us other than being a bit of an annoyance.

BUT:
When religious nut jobs get their religious doctrine passed as law. It affects us.

When religious nut jobs try to stop the research of science because that particular area of science conflicts with what ever religious piece of fiction they read. It affects us.

When religious nut jobs spread the lie that all of our founding fathers were Christians and that our country is based on Christianity to justify violating the establishment clause of the first amendment of the constitution. It affects us.

When a religious nut job refuses to employ us after he asks what religion we are in the interview and we answer honestly. It affects us.

When a religious nut job tries to use my tax dollars to promote religion in a public school system in violation of the constitution. It affects us.

When a religious nut job slanders us for getting religion removed from school when it was a Catholic family followed by a Mormon family that filed those law suits. It affects us.

When a religious nut job attacks us with a baseball bat in the name of god. It affects us.

When a religious nut job bombs an abortion clinic. It affects us.

When a religious nut job flies a jet into a building in the name of god. It affects us.

All of these things have happened and every single one affects us.

We only ask to live our lives without religion and it's doctrines being forced down our throats.

How can you be so blind to not see the impact of the abominable behavior of religious nut jobs. Most religious nut jobs are not even aware that their behavior is openly hostile. I think it is because you have been committing these offences for so long that it has just become habit.

I can only hope that you are one of the moderate religious people.
Peace be with you.

Well, debating is kind of fun. That's why school's have debate teams. Plus I'm sincerely curious about different religions. And when I point out flaws I'm not trying to "convert" anyone, again I'm just sincerely curious about how some one rationalizes what I see as a big flaw when you're going to devote your life to this religion.

Off the top of my head, from the particular to the general, here's why I care -

I care when my son doesn't learn science but rather some primitive cult's nonsense.

I care when I can't buy contraceptives.

I care when I can't buy alcohol on Sunday.

I care when a Muslim is condemned for wanting to take a ceremonial oath using the Koran rather than the Bible.

I care when rape victims must bear the rapist's child because abortion is illegal.

I care when clinics are bombed and doctors killed.

I care when stem cell research is restricted.

I care when polls show an atheist would have no chance to be elected in most jurisdictions.

I care when Christian leaders claim AIDS is sent by god.

I care when Christian leaders claim Katrina was sent by god.

I care when Christians blow up the Oklahoma City Federal Building or the Atlanta Olympics.

I care when Christians who have their finger on the nuclear trigger talk about Armageddon as a fulfillment of history.

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

well i'm agnostic and everybody has a right to be on this forum whether they are religious or not as everybody has something to say and a point of view they want to throw around and teach and learn from everybody anyway a little bit of debating doesn't hurt anybody unless people go insane and start pulling out guns and knives and swords and trying to inflict harm on one another now with that being said have a nice day

Why shouldn't atheists be interested in what religion other people are with the conservative Christians trying at every turn to pass laws based on THEIR book that affect the rest of us - including atheists?! I think they have an absolute right to say "I don't agree with you and don't you dare try to pass laws based on your book." If fundie Christians would just stop trying to pass laws based on what THEIR God says we'd all be a lot better off.

I have never tried to convert anyone to atheism. Nor did anyone make me convert. I looked at what was out there and decided that none of it made sense to me. In my mind everyone should do the same thing and while not everyone would come to the same conclusions just accept everyone for who they are and while you may not agree with their beliefs accept that they are allowed to have them.

I don't really care what people believe, as long as their value systems don't impinge on my rights to live the life that's right for me.

I also value a thoughtful exchange of ideas. Even though I don't believe, I am interested in what believers have to say and think it's important to be informed.

Nah, I don't really care what you believe in. What burns me is when I am called ignorant, stupid, sinful, etc. because I don't follow your scripture. I'm not atheist, more agnostic, really, and I don't profess to convert people to my belief. Believe whatever you want, as long as you alow me to do the same.
