Do cats naturally respond to this? I've never met 1 who didn't, even a kitten. If so, why? Is it built in or something?

Well, no, they don't respond to the word "kitty", but they do respond to the tone of voice. Cats know loving words when they hear them, they know a loving voice and are happy to come to them.

I love my kitties, and I'm sure I could say "Here stupid stupid!" and if I said it sweetly, they'd respond.

I have 9 cats and I must tell you that maybe 2 of them respond when called kitty, kitty. They are all a minimum of 5 years old, though. They know their names and that is all they respond to.

our cats respond to their individual names. Kitty kitty gets you no where.

Nope, when I talk to him my cat just stares at me like I'm an idiot. I usually make gestures that let him know I'll pet him or something to get him to come to me. Or I grab one of his toys with a bell and he'll come running from wherever he is.

actually I know some that don't.. but I have came from rural areas where the cats are wild and they are not used to humans. But most cats at least look at you when you say it. :)
