Like everyone has said, the PX is basically a small Walmart. It is tax-free, although on larger purchases I would shop around. Some things (electronics, furniture) can sometimes be cheaper off-post, even with paying sales tax.
The real money saver is the commissary. It's your military grocery store. They sell everything at-cost, meaning there is no mark up. I save tons of money shopping there, especially using coupons. When my husband is gone, I can buy groceries for myself for about $75 a month. With him here I spend a lot more, but it's still a lot less than off post. Just for example, milk costs about $1 less than Walmart, and eggs are about a third the price they are at Walmart. They also have case lot sales twice a year, when you can buy products in bulk like you would at Sam's, but for really really cheap.
Both stores require that you have a military ID card to shop, so if you don't have one yet, make sure your sponsor gets you one. You will need it to do absolutely anything with the military. Congrats on your marriage and good luck in your transition to military life (it's well worth it, I promise!)

The Post exchange is like a Target Store. They offer some good deals but sometimes you are better off shopping at Walmart. When I first moved on Post I shopped heavily at the PX and the Supermarket, then I got a BJ's, Sam's Club and Costco membership and noticed the difference. If you own a car, shop around, if not, the PX will be the Spot to shop!

You will or should be issued an ID card, this will allow you to purchase at the PX. If you haven't gotten this card ask your mate to find out the procedure in getting one.
The PX, otherwise known as the post exchange allows you to buy many staples and things at a pretty good and reduced price. The other cost you save is federal and state sales taxes for these items. It's a pretty good deal on most items. Check it out, you will see the advantage of using the PX.
