why cant we do the same as the USA, fill all jobs with English then foreigners if we cant fill the vacancy?

Seriously, I agree with you, and wish it were that way in the US. But it's not entirely the case. That's certainly the way I would like to see it here, though. Illegals get hired regularly. We are fortunate to have an unemployment rate as low as we do nation wide.
I don't know how it is in your neck of the globe, but I salute your point of view.

I hate to break it to you but that isn't how things are here in the US. The corporations here have outsourced us to death and the ones that have stayed put only hire illegals, some of the c ompanies even go so far as to get the false documents for the illegals. In one company there was over 100 employees with the same SS number! Now my beloved President has a bill before him that if he signs, will give illegals SS benefits! That really irks most of us because there aren't enough funds for legal citizens much less illegals.
Please don't believe everything you read or hear in the news, ask a citizen what's going on-we will tell you the truth!

But that's what happens already?...the work available to immigrants who have not come here specifically sponsored by an employer, is limited to a few areas of work that the indigenous population don't tend to work in. Hotel services, fruit picking etc.

I'm afraid the majority of moaning on the subject of jobs is either ill informed panic, or it is used by the usual suspects to vent their racist rage. This claim of British jobs being taken by foreigners is false and always has been.

Incidentally, the UK Treasury makes a clear profit on immigrant workers coming here, and that includes the illegal ones!

LOL Sorry but the USA doesn't make sure citizens get the jobs and then fill in where needed. We are being put out of work daily for cheaper labor whether it be from illegal or legal sources. Don't let the government figures for unemployment fool you.....there's alot here desperate for work.

I don't know where you got the idea that the US does this, but that's not exactly how things work here. Companies hire non-union, immigrant labor over that of unionized, willing-to-work Americans because they do not have to give them a fair wage or treat them well because these people are desperate for any sort of income and extremely replaceable. There are SOME jobs that Americans are really resistant to doing, such as agricultural harvesting, but a lot of what Americans "don't want to do" are actually just jobs that companies choose to fill with cheaper labor. And for the record, this causes A WHOLE LOT of complaint and outrage with many Americans.

What would you rather, an English idiot teaching your children or an educated Latvian who can probably read, write and spell better? My mates girlfriend is a good example, the 5 year old kids she teaches are far brighter than her...
