The three series BMW is a well built car that has great reviews. The only problem I see is that you are about fifteen grand or more short on getting a new one, and you will have to buy an older used car. The dealer certified used cars are the best deal for reliability, but they are sold at a premium price. You need to shop around and find a good BMW mechanic you can trust to check it out.

Speaking from experience, a BMW 3-series is an expensive car to maintain, not to mention that it'll eat gas like nobody's business, My 3.25 si was nothing but a headache.
However, A Honda Accord can be purchased for less than your funds and then the leftover money can be used to bling it out with aftermarket parts. Then you'll be getting something dependable which can also attract a look on the road.

Don't buy a BMW. I have one (old 3-series) and yeah, I love how it looks, but repairs are really expensive. Buy a car that will be cheap to repair and gets good gas mileage. It may seem boring right now, but you will be happier later, I promise.

Do some serious research! I like www.edmunds.com for their comparison info on different makes and models.

BMW stands for Big Money Wasted. Never buy a used Bimmer.... they break down so much you'd need a loan to pay for all the repairs.

For $12K, you can get a nice 1998 Lexus SC400 or GS300. These cars are not only reliable but will turn some heads.

The BMW is cool, but can be expensive to fix. I would buy a new Scion, Toyota, or Honda in that price range. You will have plenty of time for a Bimmer when you get older and can afford a better one.

get a used car and mess around. odds are you'll get in an accident so why get such a nice car? you can get a decent used car in the $5-7K range like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. plus repairs and parts would be cheaper and easier to afford. save some money because you'll need it for college or buying a home.

You can't really go wrong with a BMW...one in good shape may be tough to find in your range though, Honda is ALWAYS a good be, Acura is another good bet (hondas luxury line) Nissan makes a reliable car as well. I drive a Prowler but thats a little pricey for you and NOT a good first car, good luck to you!!

Replacement parts and labor will be more expensive on a BMW. I would recommend a used Honda or Acura. They are both very reliable and repairs are reasonable.

Toyotas and Hondas are very stable. i could bypass with the Celica or 4x4. do no longer waste your money on the eclipse. VWs are impressive and function good resale fee - distinctly the diesels. I surely have an 06 Jetta 5M trans and that i'm getting 40 seven mpg on the line.
