The subjunctive tense is when the action is not definitely going to happen. When you say "you run" or ''you walk" you know that the action is definitely happening so it is in present tense. If you say " I want you to run" it is not certain that someone is going to run. They could just say, "no I dont feel like running." So there is no running happening. Then you have to change the verb. Usually the endings for er and ir become like ar verbs. For ar verbs the end is usually like er and ir. For example an uncertain sentence is "It is necessary that you eat" The word for eat is "comer" and you eat is "comes" To make subjunctive say "comas" So the senctence is "Es necesario que tu comas." That is present subjunctive. There is also imperfect sub. but I wont get into that. It is more complicated. I know this is sort of confusing but I can only hope that it helped you. Oh and just a little correction to the person who wrote in before me, estuviera contenta si estas contenta does not make much sense. To make imperfect sub. say: "Yo estaria contenta si estuvieras contenta" It means "I might be/would be happy if you were happy.

A subjunctive is a form of a verb. It is opposite of indicativo, which is saying that something is for certain or that it is true. A subjunctive is saying that something may not be true or is not certain. It is a hypothesis.
For example: the verb Estar.
Estoy muy contenta. "I am very happy."
but, if you were to say Estuviera contenta si estás contenta. "I might be happy if you are happy."

It's usually classified as the tense of the verb, but it is actually a mode. It exists in English also, but is rarely used anymore.
