Assuming this is a serious question.....

Dogs make terrible presents, especially surprise presents. Seriously, if she really wanted a dog and could manage one, she would have gotten one already, right?

The only way a dog should be given as a gift is if:

1) The recipient has expressed a serious desire to have a dog at this time. Many people like the idea of having a dog, but don't really want the hassle.
2) The recipient is in a position to properly care for a dog (accomodations, time, expense) for the next 10-15 years.
3) The recipient selects the dog. Chosing a dog is a very personal thing, the dog you might like may be one that doesn't suit her.

So talk to your sister. If she really wants a dog, offer to pay for one for her. Then she can go and choose the perfect dog for her.

I have a golden retriever and she's wonderful. Labrador retrievers are also nice. You really shouldn't give someone a dog without talking it over with them first. A dog is a big commitment. You will be adding a member to her family, you need to make sure that she will be prepared to take care of it. It is a nice idea, but make sure that your sister thinks so before you actually get the dog.

Siberian Husky are very nice and pretty dogs there pretty good with kids too. Rotweillers are auctually a great family dog and good for protection, i wouldn't reccomend it though because she is planning to have children and the dog might get a little to playful arround the baby. Also i would reccomend a dog like a lab. there very nice dogs, i know from exprience.

I would suggest getting a stuffed plush dog w/ a ribbon & note around the neck saying that you'd like to take her to the local animal shelter to pick out what ever dog she chooses. There are many breeds available there. Sometimes a mixed breed is cuter than purebred- also let health problems.

I like big dogs too, but please do not give pets as gifts. They need masters who want to have them in the house, and who want to take care of them. This is much more likely to happen if your sister buys her own dog.

I'm not suggesting that she is a bad person, but giving a living, breathing animal to anyone as a gift is just a really bad idea!

All dogs are great. I personally love Chihuahuas. If your looking for a bigger dog, I personally like German Shepherds, Laborador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, English Springer Spaniels, Husky's.

We have a german sheppard and she is smart, loyal, protective, obediant and b-e-a-utiful!! I have two small children and babysit 3 other small children and she has never and would never hurt anyone. However, she is very protective of ALL the children and if someone came in unannounced she would protect us ALL!! But that is her job. She was easy to house train and we love her as one of our children. Buy from a well known breeder so you won't get a mix breed and you will be happy with the end results....

Yes definitely a good idea. A great dane is too big if she is having kids soon but if you get her a Labradoodle it is a big dog and if her kids turn out to be allergic to dogs the labradoodle is hypoalergenic and they wont be allergic. These dogs are a little rarer than regular breeds but they are not too hard to find

This is my pick

Standard Poodles (the larger breed)

They are tall and range anywhere from 45-80 lbs
They don't shed
Come in all colors (mine is black)
Loves being around people
Great with kids
Great with other animals
Very intelligent and trainable
Good guard dog (no, I'm not kidding)
Known to have very few health problems
