Interesting question. As a father, I believe my role is providing a structured foundation for the chaos around me. The mother is typically the more emotional and creative person. The kids need leadership from both. The dad needs to bring some variety and structure to the household. Financial contribution is helpful too.

Forty years ago, this question would be much easier.

Now, it depends on your spouse, your partner, your wife.

Society tells us that things are changing, like bread winners can be the wife and stay at home dads are going to more 'normal'.

I'm just not wired for that role. Are you? Think about what YOU think your role should be. Discuss it often with your wife.

At the very least, there are certain duties for a good parent:

Be a role model - be the most up-standing gentleman you can be.

Your kids will have your personality forever emblazed upon theirs.

Make sure they know right from wrong. Telling them isn't enough, SHOWING them is the only way they will learn.

Be a good listener for your wife.

Three key phrases to use often:
I understand, I love You, I'm sorry.

A father is very important. Fathers teach disciple and compassion. Fathers teach many things, which are unique and can't be taught by anyone else.

Mothers are likewise very important.

The two parents complement one another.
