The 1960's Jesus freaks did not preach hate and bigotry. The fundies are NOTHING like the 1960's at all. I was there!

Actually, the evangelicals are 60s hippies, who spent their youth getting drunk, getting stoned, taking LSD and screwing anything that would hold still long enough for them to unzip their flies. But now they're getting older, and they're beginning to be a little afraid that all that stuff they heard in Catholic school might really be true. So what you've got is a lot of old people trying to get into heaven now. Amazing how age changes your perspective. Personally, I did a lot of that stuff too (except the drugs, and I was a child of the 70s), but guess what? Being an atheist, I have no fear. I just had a blast, and I don't regret a thing. I feel sorry for those ex-hippies. How sad to have nothing but regret and fear in your old age. Pathetic.
And BTW: The "Jesus freaks" I knew back then were good folks, very cool and much more tolerant than today's hate mongers.

I think it's tough to define an evangelical Christian. Socially and culturally, some of them may resemble the "Jesus Freaks" of the 60's, although not all evangelical services I've been to have been of as high emotional swellings as this would imply.
Theologically, evangelicals embrace "sola fide, sola scriptura", tend towards a millenial bent (look to signs for the End Times), adhere to a Rapture interpretation (though debate on pre-Tribulation, mid-Tribulation, post-Tribulation), and may be very concerned about social issues (stewardship-oriented) or consider the earth a sinking ship, so why bother (eschatology-oriented).
I think you'll see the "Jesus Freak" type among the young and among recent converts, but look for more serious demeanors and more studious minds among older evangelicals, at least that's been my experience.

I was around in the '60s, and met plenty of Jesus Freaks. Today's evangelicals, particularly the Fundamentalists, seem to have nothing in common with the "Jesus people" of the hippie era. Do you see the evangelicals giving away their possessions and living communally, as the Jesus Freaks often did? No. Are they preaching love, tolerance, and the brotherhood of man? If anything, today's Fundamentalists seem to be preaching a gospel of separatism and division. So I wouldn't say that the two groups are alike at all, save for a shared belief in Jesus Christ.

No. Jesus freaks were tolerant and kind of others. Today's evangelical Christians seem to consider themselves God's policemen, trying to take over the government and abridge the constitution to make sure people do exactly as they think they should do.

Holy Poop! There are so many definitions for an Evangelical Christian I don't know where to begin. Wacko's, weirdo's, fanatics, insanity...list goes on and on.
Could you just imagine what would happen if our country was lead my an Evangelical Christian? Wow, that would be scary.
No I don't think they are left over from the 60's, but I DO know that the IQ and education level of their sect is very low. Most of their followers are poor and uneducated.

They're almost as bad as the rabid atheists, who spend every waking moment insulting faith. So the question would be, "which are worse"? And the evangelicals of today are nothing like the Jesus freaks of the 60's and 70's, guess you had to be there.

I never thought about this. You just could be right.
The big difference in, the Evangelicals have Republican political support, and are downright scary. The Jesus freaks weren't.

Dunno about 1960's JF's - they seem more pacifistic 'love everyone' than fire and brimstone evangelicals.
And as for modern JF's - the website below suggests they are rather more sensible.
So, no. Evangelicals appear to be entirely in a class of their own!
