My cousin is only 14, and I realize he has been acting different lately. Then one day he told me he drank at a New Year's party. My cousin will not speak to me about it though, and tries to avoid me when he seems high or drunk. He idolized his older brother, who is in college (who also did drugs and alcohol, though he claims he stopped). The people my cousin hangs out with are into drugs also, as is his metal rock band. He is only 14 and I am really worried. I cannot tell his parents because they will just ship him off to India as they did his brother. Please help.

Miracle Worker it sounds like he is making poor life choices but he must be allowed to do so. Hopefully his parents don't have blinders over their eyes and realize that he is rebelling with his behaviour. Having experienced this type of behaviour myself many years ago I can only hope that he will outgrow this behaviour as he matures. You can try and talk with him but a kid that age often thinks that he knows everything and so what you have to say may be just wasting your breath. It is very nice to see a cousin so concerned about her relatives behaviour and I do wish you luck in trying to be a good example to this young fella.

Well, if you have a good relationship with your parents start there. Maybe you parents (his aunt and uncle) can sit with him and help discuss why he is doing what he is doing.

As for being shipped to India, you need to let your parents know that you dont want his parents to know because of this. Remind them that being shipped away will only make your cousin resent his parents and loose respect for them, by not working through the problem with him.

Good Luck, he is lucky to have you as a cousin.

Tell his parents. They can get him into some kind of treatment.
