Actually - originally - the wedding party was made up of the Maid Of Honor, The Bride's attendents, The Best Man and the Ushers. The terms Bridesmaid and groomsmens were coined later on. Back then, the men in the wedding party were also in charge of seating guests prior to the wedding - hence the reason they were called ushers.
Today, most people have both. The groomsmen generally means the guys in the wedding party other then the groom and best man. The ushers are the guys at the back, "usehering" people to there seats. And yes, it is still acceptable to have groomsmen act as ushers as well if you wish.

The best man is like the Maid of Honor. The Ushers help get all of the guests to their seats, and the Groomsmen stand up with the groom and walk down the aisle with the bridesmaids. Groomsmen help to get the groom ready, help with anything else that needs to be done before the wedding, the Ushers just sit people at the ceremony and may help out with the reception as well.

Groomsmen are part of the wedding party. Ushers direct people to their seats, maintaining an appropriate balance brides side vs grooms side. For a duties planning worksheet, go to www.abcustom.com and planning tools...then select Attendants. It will list the duties of the groomsmen.

groomsmen stand at the altar with the wedding party and ushers show people to their seats. A groomsman can play both roles.

On the bride's side there can be one or multiple Maids of Honor (or Matrons of Honor) and bridesmaids...on the groom's side there can be one or multiple best men and groomsmen.
Ushers are supposed to escort female guests down the aisle to their seats. They are usually family or friends who are close to the couple, but who either can't be in the wedding party because of certain reasons or whom the bride and groom aren't as close with...

Groomsman is also the best man and gives the man the ring to place on the brides hand. Ushers place people in their seats and stand with wedding party during the ceremony.

grooms men are usually friends and relatives of the groom and sometimes the bride (brides brother, cousin, bro-in-law etc) but mostly the groom and they stand at the front of the church with the bride and groom and are at the head table with the wedding party. ushers are people usually male who are friends and family of the bride and groom not usually more from one or the other and they help seat people at the church asking which side they are on and are not usually at the front with the wedding party they are usually acknowledged in the program or during a toast when you thank people and even gotten a small gift of thanks like you get your wedding party.
