can someone with terminal illness be put in a coma to combat fear of death?

People with some terminal illnesses such as cancer will most likely pass into a coma as a part of the progression of the disease. The pain medications they take make them very sleepy much of the time. Many patients take meds to counteract any anxiety they may feel.

Often services are available to talk about what the fears are and to help cope with them. Sometimes the fear of death is related to unfinished business, so taking care of the unfinished business often alleviates the fears - doing a will, making funeral arrangements, seeing everyone they need to see, having a plan for palliative care, taking care of financial issues, a sense of closure that everyone will be ok, etc. Sometimes the fear is a fear that death will be very painful. People can be reassured that the pain can be well controlled with medication.

I hope this helps.

no-one I've known with a terminal illness has ever wanted to live like a zombie before dying, they (if physically still able) want to cram in as much as possible even though they are scared. Perhaps the only time when they feel they want 'calming' down is right at the very end when they have only hours to live, and can feel it's the countdown to the end, then some receive upon request a mild tranquiliser. Those in alot of pain have morphine anyway. I have never heard anyone wanting to miss out on the precious time left to them through fear of death.

Most of terminal illness patients go into a coma. My mother passed away of cancer recently and she went into a coma 2days before passing away. I remember that she was always alert asking the time it was, making sure she did not miss the time of her medicines and trying to eat something. She tried not to take to much morphine because she knew the more morphine the sooner she would get into a coma. She knew the process because she had lost a nephew to cancer. Eventually she was taking so much morphine for the pain that she gradually slipped into the coma. When my mother was in the coma I used to talk to her telling her to let go that it was time for her to go in peace. I reassured her that everything would be ok.

There would have to be another reason for artificial coma.

I think it should be aloud, if you are suffering and in pain!! Who wants to deal with that. I know somewhere in Europe they let people do stuff like that, I think it should be no one's choice but your own!!

How ridiculous is that! I would say no. What a shame for someone dying to be afraid of it!
