I'd like to use 'I Dreamed a Dream as my audition song, but I don't know if it's proper for a singer like me. My range is, assuming middle C is C4, F2 (though I prefer not to sing so low as it rather strains my voice) to A5.

This is an audition for a community theatre production.

You have basically the same range as I do, just a few notes higher on the top. Using that as the only factor, I would say tat the song will fit your range well. A lot depends on your tone quality though, and it's hard to say without actually hearing you.

As for the appropriateness of the song for your audition, what are you auditioning for?
-If this is a broadway audition, go for it.
-If this is a school (K-12) audition for chorus or the school musical or something like that, go for it.
-If this is for community theater, go for it.

If this is for a college audition, make sure that it is appropriate. If it's the theater department, it probably will be. But if it's auditioning to be a music major, they generally want you to sing a more traditional (classical, etc.) song and showtunes are not usually accepted.

If this is for opera, it won't be appropriate. When auditioning for opera, you must sing opera to show that you are capable of doing it.

Overall, remember that an audition is a job interview where you have to prove to the employer that you are the best. If you go to an office looking or acting like you want a job at McDonalds, they aren't going to give you the office job. Always think about it in that aspect when auditioning!

Only use that song if it's for high school or community theatre auditions!

In the professional theatre world you should NEVER sing anything for an audition that is currently on broadway or has been on broadway in the past 5 years. And seeing how Les Mis is VERY popular and is doing a revival then it is a BIG no no.

As for range... this song was my first song as a solo. and i totally botched the low notes. if it strains you pick a different song. You might be able to do it with some strain but think about when you're nervous, it'll be a lot harder!

It's actually now considered a faux pas to use any song from Les Miserables for an audition, especially for any professional theatre. But if you're auditioning for a recording gig or for a company that does not do musicals, then you can probably get away with it. I personally say, if you do something different with the song, then use it whenever you want.

Personally, for a community theater, I don't know if it matters as much what you sing as it does how you sing it, but for this song you may consider how old you are and whether you fit the role. A lot of young girls like this song, but this is ment for an experienced, weather-beaten, woman. You can't look young and pretty and pull it off very well. Unless you are over 25 and aiming for an intense role in the musical- this may either come acrossed as too dramatic or not very well acted.
