I find that I am quite shy and need some advice.

Just be yourself and introduce yourself to them and smile.Don't use any cheesy pick up lines because they don't work. Girls dont' fall for that kind of stuff. They either laugh at it or tease the guy back.
Trying to hard or trying to impress doesn't work either. If she's a nice girl then she will want to get to know the real you. If she wants your money then she will show you that she's out for her self and she doesn't care for you at all.

Just be yourself dude. Communicating with the opposite sex doesn't mean anything is different. I act as if they were my guy friends, but with a little more carefulness so to put it. Just talk to her about something you know ya'll two have in common and after talking for like 5 minutes, you drop the "oh I didn't catch your name by the way. Im [name]. And you are?"
Works everytime...

Bring up a topic casually that is relevant to your current situation. Say you're at an art show.. side up next to her and mention something casually about the piece you're both looking at. If you're working next to her at some computers, ask a question about something. Make sure it's something you can really talk about though.

aww well you need to be upfront and not cut around corners. if she's with a group of friends, then direct your attention to her but still make yourself aware of the others---you dont want to be rude.
just go up to this girl and say "hi my name's _______, what's your name?"
it'll make it easier for the both of you in the long run
other things you can talk about:
how is she?
school(if you're in school)
seen any movies lately?
books
and say some things about yourself so she doesnt feel put on the spot.

I only have one bit of advice for you...be yourself, don't pretend to be some macho a*shole. Don't be doing the eyebrow wiggling, superhero smile, head tossed back, "Heyyy, how YOU doin'?" kind of stuff. JOEY FROM "FRIENDS" SHOULD NOT BE YOUR PICKING-UP-CHICKS GURU!

Find something you have in common and strike up a conversation about it, maybe you enjoy the same activities
(Not the movies, they don't count, any moron can sit on their behind in the dark for 2 hours). Find a common ground and go from there. Good luck buddy!

If you are shy, then you just need more practice. After you get shot down a 100 or so times, you won't care anymore, and then you'll be doing good:)

treat them as you would anyone else, it shows confidence, and dont get caught looking at her inappropriately. at least not at first, self confidence is all you need it shines and women , anyone for that matter are attracted to a confident person, but dont cross the line between confident and conceited its a pretty bold one, so im sure that you will do fine!

Be yourself, talk honestly, and with respect. Its good for you, and good for the person you want to speak with. A sense of Humour helps, and be a good listener. Can work a lot, if not, don't be a jerk, just be you ... that will work.

im shy too start with a smile and say hi and start a conversation its quite simple. your shyness will go away why u have a conversation. trust me im shy too
