I've wanted to learn Italian for the longest time, and this year I'm going to do it. I just have NO idea where to start. I really don't want to purchase any computer programs or things like that, because I know I could learn it for free on the internet somewhere. Anyone know of any websites that have some sort of online course or teaching program? Thanks so much...and Happy New Year :)

Start with the library. (I'm so pleased to see people answering that already.) Audition a few to get a sense of what approach works best for you (inter-library loan if necessary). That will give you some more familiarity with the language and information to decide whether you want to take a class, buy a few CDs, etc.

Watch Italian-language movies and listen to music with Italian words. Don't worry about 'studying' them, it's just to help your ear get attuned to the sounds.

At some point, you'll definitely need someone to speak with. Classes are good for that, but also try advertising. Craig's list, nearby universities/colleges, library, bookstores are a few places to start. You might be able to trade on your English skills.

Immersion is the best. So save your pennies. You have a brilliant excuse for a trip. Imagine a month in Italy, a couple of hours of language classes during the day ....

Check your local community college. Contact a Catholic church to see if they can refer you. You can also try tapes and books. Post an ad in your city's Craig's List. That's how I hooked up with people wanting to learn Italian. Ciao, Bella!
